i've also got tickets for The Last Shadow Puppets at The Grand Ballroom on the 30th Oct, that should be amazing!!!!

I'm jealous  Me and DD are in NY from 6-10 November and would love to catch a band. I've tried searching the internet but I've not found anything. Can anyone recommend websites or specific venues that I should look at?

im not sure to be honest, im a big fan of the Shadows so i found that through nme. that mught be a good place to look, or by searching around on the american ticketmaster.

also, if your interested, from the beginning of november, its the new season of the NBA, so im going to try and get tickets for a game whilst im there, the fixtures havent been released yet, but you never know, the knicks might be at home when ur there too

the best website i've found for US gigs, is https://www.pollstar.com

you search by date, and city, and it'll come up with what is on.. then you can find where to book it, either direct wtih the venue, ticketmaster or ticketweb..

as for steak... another vote for blue smoke.. been there loved it..
if you like ribs, a cheaper, but just as tasty as blue smoke, there is maras homemade, which is in the east village, and if you want a lavish steak house to go to, reasonably priced though, i can wholeheartedly recommend keens steakhouse... awesome!! i think my and my sister paid about $180 for a 2 course meal, beers, vodkas, and wow, the food was great... it was my birthday though, so i have to have one proper nice meal out..

one thing, if you want a guided tour around a certain area of NYC, try a big apple greeter.. they are free, they don't accept tips, I've had one in the past, she taught me how to use the subway, and get around and about on that, (great hints!) showed me the staten island ferry, lower manhattan and chinatown.. wow... 4 hours worth.. it was great... all you do is request what you want to see, and they'll match you up with a local with that knowledge...

anyother questions, feel free to ask...

  • We are looking to go to see Mary Poppins in Oct while we are in New York, is this still highly popular do we need to book before we go?
I know you can't tell me exactly but if you have a rough idea I would be greatful.

Thanks markymoo - used pollstar and have now booked for Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band on the Saturday night at Terminal 5 - just 6 blocks up from our hotel. :)
Sunday night we're going to see Cirque du Soleil at Madison Square Garden. I think that should keep us going for now!

If you want to see one of the popular Broadway shows (The Lion King/Mary Poppins/The Little Mermaid or Mama Mia at the moment) I would recommend booking beforehand, I was in New York the week before last and was chatting to one of the agents from the discount tickets outlet and he said in all the time the 3 Disney shows have been running (10 years for The Lion King) they have never had discount tickets for them, we tried to book for The Lion King through the theatre but they were sold out till mid-August so my advice is if you really really want to see the show, book in advance before you go, it's my only regret about my New York trip as i would have loved to see The Lion King but had to settle for Chicago

We will be renting a car on the morning we check out to begin our drive South, anyone got tips? Went to California last year, and used "US Car Hire" who did a good Alamo based package with all insurance and excess covered, but they seem a little more expensive when renting from NY.
Having JUST got back, I'll say again that hammy the hammer's suggestion to rent via Hertz from North White Plains is a Top Tip. Although if you are going south you might prefer to find a Hertz location to the south, and he may be able to suggest one with easy access by metro / train. I don't think I was charged extra for returning it to JFK - once you've put one option into their website it defaults to that, so although I checked and re-checked I wouldn't like to swear to that. And after a week of driving an automatic on the wrong side of the road, getting BACK to JFK was not a problem.

The beauty of NWP is that the Hertz depot really is just over the road from the station. You would easily walk further than that that a taxi rank at the airport.

Whatever you do, unless you are highly experienced and completely unafraid of driving abroad, I really wouldn't rent from the middle of NYC. Setting off from NWP was quite straightforward, once I'd worked out how to adjust the seat, for which I had to get help!

Plus from Hertz you can get Nectar points and there's an extra points offer on at the moment. :money:

My boys described the car as fascist - I don't know if it's a function of automatics, American cars, or rental cars in general, but they didn't like the fact that they were locked in once I moved into Drive, and not let out until I changed out of Drive. And we lost a suitcase in the boot one night, which caused a certain amount of hysteria. Mind you we could have lost a boy in that boot: watching DS1 pack it with just his legs hanging out it was very tempting just to give him a good shove. :rotfl:

And for anyone wondering, the guitar has made it safely back and is now back in one piece. :D

A final little whinge, at check-in I was asked if I realised we had a baggage allowance of 30 kg each (I'd booked to come back all posh) because our luggage seemed a little light. I said yes, I realised, but a) we wouldn't have fitted any more into our cases and b) THEY DIDN'T LET ME GO SHOPPING! The lady agreed that that was very mean, and that I'd been hard done by.

But I'm not going back just for shopping. And I'm definitely not going back to Wildwood ...

Aaah yes.. Auto Lock.. .my car here in the UK does that.. (manual as well), but there is an option to turn it off... so i have.. i don't like it locking the door.. i dunno why....
