Hi there,
I've just found this forum and I'm hoping I can ask one of you NYC experts to help me.
I've been searching for a hotel for a few weeks now and I'm struggling. I'm going to NYC with my husband and 2 kids in October. They will be 2 years old and 6 months respectively. We'll be flying in from Texas on 23 October then flying back to the UK on 28 October so we need 5 nights accommodation. I'm looking for a 3 star hotel, possibly one with a kitchenette as that would be a big help with bottle sterilising! but this isn't a necessity. As for the area, I'm open to suggestions. In my head, I'm thinking Central Park area but really just want to be in a relatively safe area. As for price, well I'm a bit surprised at the prices I'm finding but I think that has more to do with the fact that the last time I was in NYC was 10 years ago and I'd just left Uni so we stayed in a hotel with a shared bathroom and therefore it didn't cost much at all. I'm hoping to get somewhere for under £200 per night inc tax, under £150 if possible?!?
I'd be grateful of any help and advice. Thanks in advance0 -
I can't give specific suggestions, but what you're looking for might be called an 'efficiency suite'.
We spent two nights on our recent trip in a Holiday Inn Express (booked through Pigsback so I should get some Piggypoints!) NOT in NYC, and that had a fridge, microwave and coffee machine in each room. The rooms had two double beds and were plenty big enough to put a cot into. Breakfast included in the price (and a good selection too), but no restaurant for other meals. Oh, and there was a washing machine and tumble drier too!
Another suggestion would be Radio City Apartments: I think that if you search back through the thread you'll find some mention of them.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
sorry still no time to provide much input however i can confirm that the dates up until the friday have been expensive for quite a while ( something must be happening.. .convention etc ) .
radio city apts would be a good choice but it may be that you have to keep checking to see if they have availability. ....if they don't go back and check on a regular basis.
there's plenty of other advice on this thread with reference to accommodation ...you may want to explore the feasibility of stopping somewhere like jersey city or similar ...bearing in mind the travelling expenses ...advice should be on here about selecting a hotel near the path system which will get you from NJ into lower manhattan at a reasonable speed and price0 -
Wow..... that's fantastic (and quick)
Many Many Many Thanks to you sir markymoo (as you shall henceforth be known).
I'm excited about this again now (after a period of some despondancy about the prices). The Mrs will also be made up to get an extra night there too.. that tip about staying on a Saturday is INVALUABLE...
I can tell you're a regular traveller to NYC - if you're there at New Year I'll certainly buy you a pint.
oh.. i can only wish i was there doing NYC @ NYE... but, alas, the funds never seem to be there.... I always seem to go for my Birthday, which is beginning of March, and if i have some money... i try squeeze another trip in, Sept, Oct time, which is looking unlikley this year..
boo.. only one holiday this year... but hey.. i've already been to NYC 10 times...
also, the extra night helps.. esp by the time you get there, the first night, you're really not in the mood to do much.. make sure you stay up til at least 11pm, and then you'll be set for a great holiday... go to bed too early, you'll be stuck on UK time..0 -
Anyone stayed at Hotel Chandler?0

Thanks to those that have responded. I've tried the Radio City apartments but they are fully booked. I've looked at AKACentral Park but these are too expensive. I'm considering turning some Virgin Miles into Hilton Honours points to stay at the Embassy Suites but not sure on the location of these given we wil have a buggy and will be walking a lot. Has anyone stayed here or knows the walking distance between the Embassy Suites and Central Park, Museum of Natural History, FAO Schwartz??
TIA0 -
No, but google maps is quite good for checking that kind of thing. You put in a location you know, then you can navigate from one point to another.
I've put in both embassy hilton nyc and holiday inn express nyc and there are several options for both those. Take very comfy shoes ... wherever you are staying!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Thank so much Marymoo- very useful advice:)
so has anyone ever flown with Kuwait airlines then? am getting prices of £60 ish more with american- worth the extra cash or not?
Can just imagine my mothers' face if I tell her we're flying kuwait - she's not the most 'culturally exposed' person in our little village!
Look forward to your advice....
also Markymoo (and anyone else!), if you wouldn't mind giving your opinion, how much is it worth to be in NYC on NYE ... there's obviously a price premium to travel just before and after, but is it a particuarly great atmosphere, or is N'Y always like that? Is there plenty open to see and do on new years day? (I'd love to plan a hangover, but not with mammy around!!)0 -
Any hotel recommendations - myself, husband and 4 year old for 2 nights 20th Dec - 22nd Dec, would like to be relatively central and its only a stopover so we're happy for the little one to sleep in the same bed as us but we'd prefer an ensuite rather than shared bathroom!
A lot of hotels seem to come up on expedia as exceeding max guests...my experience of US hotels in the past was that you pay for the room and they don't mind how many you squeeze in there!! Has this changed?
I was hoping to find something around £100 a night at the most...Any sites/hotels to phone directly?0
