sarcasm doesn't come over on forums that well...
and as for bars... plenty in greenwich that i can spend hours in... though i'm more of a tribeca person myself.. you meet more locals there IMO...
ok.. bed time... nearly 3am...0 -
i think you'll be fine.. it'll rain for 10 mins, and 20 mins later it'll dry up as it is so hot out there right now.. you'll enjoy it regardless.. don't let the weather spoil it for you
But morning should be fine if it's anything like the weather we had.
So, a few tips, in random order and apologies as they may have been given already in the first few pages of this thread ...
1. In July (and probably other summer months), you DO need suncream in New York. Well, if you're a fair-skinned Brit you do. (Not half as much as you do if you hit the beaches in Wildwood, NJ, and I have three lads now sporting unattractive shades of lobster to prove this.)
2. The tap water may be perfectly safe, but it tastes vile when lukewarm, so we bought bottles when we were out and about. Seemed to be cheaper from street vendors than in delis / shops.
3. The roof garden of the Met Mus is wonderful. Little cafe, interesting sculptures at the moment, and views almost rivalling the Top of the Rock, and much quieter because fewer aircon fans blasting out nearby.
4. If you are renting a car AFTER NY, Hammy the Hammer's suggestion of going north to the Hertz depot at North White Plains is an EXCELLENT one. Remember to check the offers available with your Nectar card. The depot is visible from the station, lift available if you've got luggage. And if you are staying at the Cosmopolitan (and where else would you stay?) it's a 5-10 minute walk to a subway (Brooklyn Bridge) which goes straight to Grand Central station (and has lifts for that luggage). It was $6.50 for the hour long journey to NWP, which would get me about 6 miles at home, so good VFM. Oh, and then you are driving off on quiet roads while you get the hang of it. And then you can return it to a different location, eg the airport you're flying from.
5. If you are travelling from Grand Central station, get there in plenty of time, and just gawp. It is awesome. And I was FINALLY allowed to look in some shops, which as I hadn't got to Macy's or Bloomingdale's or Tiffany's or ANYWHERE was only fair. There's even a food market, where we found Drunken Goats Cheese, complete with a sign saying "don't worry, we checked their ID before getting them drunk."
6. Postcards: look out for them at 8 for $1. Somehow we missed these until after we'd bought classy ones in Borders.
Enough for now. Back off to enjoy the next few days. Will add other NY things if I think of them.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Back to money saving, do you reckon we will see winter off peak sale fares at £250 return or less?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0
