oh !!!! me, people are actually recommending one of the tourist trap places as a restaurant to go to... shoot me now, or lock me up, i'll go insane if i actually see someone recommending places like bubba gump, planet hollywood, or tgi !!!!ing fridays...

get your !!!! down to little italy, tribeca, and find some proper new york restaurants / bars, where people who live in new york actually go... you might find out that they are better quality food / drink, lower prices, and you'll have a better time overall, and actually see new york for what it is, not just flashing lights and yellow cabs..

have you eaten in bubba gumps yourself?

my kids loved it in there, the same as I did, it was a bit of fun, the food was ok and probably better than the meal we did have in little italy (if you cna find what is left of little italy that is now it's being swallowed up by chinatown), yes, there is more to new york than flashing lights and yellow cabs but there those flashing lights and yellow cabs are great too

don't be such a snob don't have a pop at people for their personal choices just because they differ from yours, we all have a right to give advice adn just because you wouldn't give that advice does not make it more or less valid

New York - BIG. Hot, humid.

Cosmopolitan - all I'd been led to expect. Comfy, friendly, bijou. (Which means if you're bringing a cat you want to swing, get a two bedded room.)

    Reade's - great.

My only lack is a cup of Redbush / Rooibos tea. Suggestions on a postcard please ...

Off to write that email ...

Oh, and DON'T come in July if you don't like it hot and humid. I know, I was warned ...

Stop babbling and go enjoy yourself, you lucky moo!!! :D:D

Quick question about the subway and bare with me because I know it's one open to opinion...

People say that we shouldn't use the subway or walk around late at night but how late is late?! We were planning on getting taxi's after midnight but have people not felt safe being out walking/being on the subway earlier than this?

I have walked around Harlem, Lower East Side, East Village and parts of Brooklyn at 4am and never felt at all threatened but then again, OH and I don't really look like tourists and we were with friends from those areas on some of those occasions. However, I think NY is one of the safer cities to walk around as it is always busy, even into the early hours.

As Marky said, the main reason we avoid the subway late at night is because of how long you have to wait. We did have a few problems getting cabs from Harlem to the East Village on a Saturday night but that was because of how busy it was so we just walked instead.

Just use your common sense, many people seem to leave it at home when they go away on holiday :o

The first time I went to NY I was too much of a wuss to go on the subway :o , but having braved the subway in London and finding it wasn't that scary we went on it in NY last year and it was fine.

I say fine , but we did wonder what we'd let ourselves in for , as when we were waiting for the subway on our way into the city from JFK as there was a big argument going on between 2 people on the platform and then as we were getting on it there was an altercation with another couple  It was ok after that though!

Whatever happened to those Guardian Angels with the red berets that used to patrol the subways?.

  • Hi guys!!

I am looking to get away to the US for a few weeks mid-September and I am thinking that NYC is the place to be, at least for the first and last few days of our hols.

Have been having a look around for flights and there seems to be quite a lot around the £350-400 mark for a return from LON to NYC, which seems fine...however...there is a catch!!

I am pregnant and so I am thinking that Premium Economy (as a minimum) is the only way to go...I will be 15 weeks or so by then so I am not worried about the flights, just about being comfortable and able to move around a little. I would rather go direct but would consider a change at the right price :D

Having a little scout around there are some reasonable priced PE flights on Zoom but a little digging would suggest that they are not the most reliable and the seats are not really PE anyway (did PE on flyglobespan to NY last year - what a con :rotfl: , upgraded to Business Class on the way back which was better but still 6+ hours delay).

Most of the scheduled airlines seem to be Economy or Business/First and the gulf in prices is massive...Virgin do a PE service but it is coming out at £900 EACH

Do any of the charter flights go to NYC and do PE seats (have I got that the right way round? I was thinking the likes of MyTravel or Thomas Cook Airlines) and can anybody find me a deal!!

Dates: Pref 13 Sep for 14 nights (but can be a bit flexible) not earlier than 12th though - could stay longer if forced ;)

From: Birmingham (ideal!!) Manchester (fine) Gatwick/Heathrow (for the right flight!)

    To: Any NYC

    Who: 2 Adults (1 pregnant lady :D )

Oooo - what a waffle :rotfl: Can anybody help??

Just got back (literally 2 hours ago) from New York! Totally whacked but as a dedicated MSEr felt honour bound to report in!

Weather - hot and humid as we were warned but there's record high temperatures at the moment (highest in over 50 years). Still it's bearable, just jump into air conditioned shops every couple of blocks and drink plenty of water.

Shopping - IMHO Century 21 is over-rated (it's a giant free-for-all). Good luck if you can be bothered with the hustle and bustle - we couldn't! I think you're better off going along to Macy's, searching through the sale rails, and getting an extra 11% off with a voucher from the visitor centre.

Getting around - we started off on a 2 day pass for a hop on, hop off tour bus. It's a good way to see the sights from an elevated position and get all the inside info from the tour guide. We had a really great guide called John (knew it all) and a crazy, politically incorrect guide (can't remember his name) who was hilarious. Ask to extend your 2 day pass into a 3 day one for no extra cost when you book - they will! Subway was no problem.

Eating - too many to list here but the Carnegie Deli was good - the portions are huge so ask to split one dish between 2 of you. The Hard Rock Cafe went down a storm with the teenagers and had a reasonably priced menu.

Markets - Sundays (7th Avenue) - we were taken by surprise to find this bang outside our hotel's door. Eat from the street vendors and haggle with the stall holders! Egyptian Cotton sheets a bargain (600 count king size 2 X sheets/4 X pillowcases $15).

Limos - my sister booked a limo back to JFK for $65 (tolls included), we booked one back to Newark for $95 (tolls included) from AL. Ask your hotel to book for you. It was a fun way to end the trip and only $25 more than a regular mini van.

Theatre - Chicago was great. Avoid the ticket touts like the plague - there are lots of forgeries about. The 4pm line for cut price tickets are endless, but if you've got the time go for it. We didn't want to spend a couple of hours queuing so just got our tickets from the main booking office on Broadway. $79 each for decent seats.

    Have fun!

what a waffle indeed, but full of great information that makes it so much easier and feels worthwhile helping you, so thanks for a starter..

now.. one way of doing this is a sneaky upgrade route that isn't guaranteed, but sometimes can work out cheaper than booking a PE, and definately cheaper than a bus class seat, and that is to fly US Airways, and on the day at the airport, "GO ENVOY".. the way it works, is that you book a normal cheap seat, and at the airport pay $500 per person, to upgrade to the bus class cabin... you can do it one way, or both ways... now yeah, you'll end up paying £350 + 300 + 300, for a return flight, BUT, this is hell of a lot cheaper than a standard business class ticket, which would be in the region of £1600...

just a thought... as for PE, Heathrow is probably going to be the easiest place to get a decent fare from... i don't think there are many airlines, esp from Man that do a PE service!
