Good luck with your PHD and your desk.....I guess at least I have my mango desk. I bet you get your desk before I get my bookshelf though!

I just received the mango shelf from oakfurnitureland. I'll accept it, but I now see how the company are able to cut prices on all competitors, and it has nothing to do with clumsy couriers. I believe that these items are ALL seconds, with some damage that has tagged them as rejects by somebody's quality control

In the case of this shelf, surprise surprise, there is a serious crack in the wood. But I've decided to keep it rather than go through all those email wranglings again. Once again, the design and the look of the mango wood os beautiful. But I'm sure now that whenever I choose to deal with oakfurnitureland I am dealing in seconds. I think the company ought to be up front about that, but to hell with it, I'll compromise to save the money it would cost to get one from another company without imperfections.

And there;s another desk already ordered, so I can only hope that when it arrives the damage will only be very minor. But I tell you this: I guarrantee that it will be damaged in some way. If I'm wrong when it arrives, I'll post that, too. But what's gonna happen, I'm certain, is another post from me saying, Yep, it's damaged.

It's still perhaps worth buying their well designed products, but just be aware of what you're probably getting.

Well, I promised to report the condition of the 2nd mango desk from oakfurnitureland when it arrived.
I had said in my last mail that I was 100 percent confident that the desk would be damaged, because I was convinced the company are actually selling seconds as new.

But I promised I would post if the item was in New undamaged condition.

The reason I took a gamble is because the designs are great, the prices are great, and I would be prepared to accept a little bit of damage. It's a calculated gamble.

    The desk arrived today.

What's your best guess: is it in New undamaged condition? is it damaged?

    Guess.

Of course it's damaged. How could there be any doubt?

The damage is too awful to keep even if compensation were offered: the top of the desk has been lifted clear off the vertical support on one side, which is cracked. You could wedhge avout 50 sheets of paper in that gap that is supposed to be flush.

    I give up.
  • Hi I was a bit worried when I saw Gary's comments as I had already ordered from oakfurnitureland.

Although there were lot's of good comments his were pretty scathing.

My dining table, chairs and CD cabinet arrived today and they were perfect and obviously brand new. Given the price I paid I reckon that I've saved about £600 quid!

I'm very happy and will be back when we do bedroom!!

I got a oak (reclaimed wood) table (extended) and 4 solid chairs with leather seating from a local supplier the other week, it was slight second with a slight minor crack in it. The table is very heavy just over a inch thick for £575 inc del not from oakfurnitureland though
  • I have just started a dispute with the above regarding my oak sideboard which has started to fall apart after only 6 months. Cracks have appeared in many of the joints. They say I should have treated it with Danish oil.

    Pah!!

I'll let you know how it pans out......

I just had a long and positive conversation with a representative from oakfurnitureland that's worth passing on. The chap was very genuine and patient, despite being put out by my suspicions of 'seconds,' which counts for alot. He took the time to explain the likely reasons for the problems I've had, and we batted the issues around for a good long time.
The likely reasons fall between courier mishandling between the point of assembly and the receipt, and the expectations we should have of rustic wood even under showroom inspection. Either way, it's got nothing to do with 'seconds,' I'm fully persuaded now. I was wrong in those suspicions.
The designs themselves, as you probably already know, are great.
But, fair's fair, the main thing in the context of this thread is my impression that this is a genuine company with a decent policy of addressing customer's complaints and even, as in my case, some customer's misapprehensions!
  • Well we had all our oak items last week and my wife and I are really pleased with items. Didn't have any problems with company or delivery people. We would personally buy again from this company. :D

I received my order today (I ordered on 14th Feb) - a mango bookshelf. I am quite disappointed as its got brown paint dabbed on any scratches and scrapes the bookshelf has - one area is about an inch wide! I didn't realise that I was getting second grade furniture and have emailed them about this. Someone is clearly aware of the amount of scratches and scrapes the bookshelf has, as otherwise brown paint wouldn't have been dabbed over them! I am quite disappointed after waiting so long! I will update with their response when I receive a reply.

I hope others receive better quality with their orders!
