Is an Ipad Air 2 really worth 3 times as much as a Hudl 2?

Well, glancing over the specs for the ipad mini2, it seems it doesn't have a Micro SD card slot, and I can't find any mention of HDMI out.

It's also got a 1.2 GHz processor (Hudl 2 has a 1.8 GHz processor) and 1 GB of RAM (Hudl has 2 GB), so I'm struggling to see what the big attraction is, for a tablet that costs over twice as much

Don't read too much into processor and memory specs of Apple products. They work differently...and more efficiently...than comparable android devices.
The mini 2 looks poor on paper but is every bit as good as a higher spec android tablet.
However it's a lot more expensive....battery life is great though.

A lot of the Apple success is built on image.
I don't like the way Apple devices 'just work'. I don't find ios at all instinctive

I appreciate that, but what I'm asking is, are they X times better, the X being the number of times they are more expensive?

No but then nothing is. It's always diminishing returns as you move up a price point. If you fly on holiday..the budget seats get you to the same destination as first class but the first class experience is more pleasant.

I have an iPad Air 2. I think it's really good. Is it better than a Hudl? I'm not really bothered, especially when people make specs comparisons. Why? because there is hardly a time when I push the machine so hard it maxes out the equipment.

I like the Apple Eco system. I like that I can start an iMessage conversation on my iMac, then continue it on my iPad. I like sharing my photos with all my devices with Photostream. I like the App Store. It's a very easy machine to use.

One big advantage of Apple is the resale value. It's very high even for faulty items. Once you have an Apple product the resale value does really help with the cost of future upgrades.

The Hudl is like a Ford Focus being sold for a price of a fiesta, in the hope you'll be a continued customer for Tesco to make up the discount they're offering, like the focus its aimed at everyone and with that offers compatibility with many accessories, but at the price of less reliability.

The iPad is the Ferrari, it's built at a premium and knowing their customers can afford it has an added premium on top for the name, it'll do everything it says on the tin reliably but at the price of limiting who is allowed to accessorise.

I use both android tablets and iPad, you can't compare a budget Hudl to an premium iPad. I was looking for a premium tablet I wanted to get the premium Samsung galaxy Tab S, in the UK they only sold the 16gb version, I wanted the 32gb version, I ended up getting a 64gb iPad Air 2 - on specs it was better value to go with the iPad.

iPad has won me over as a reliable traveling companion, battery constantly gives at least 10hrs of usage and no usage when in standby, the android tablets I have are supposed to give 10hrs usage but only average 6hrs and lose 20% charge across the day in standby, I love android, they're the tablet I use indoors, in front of the tv.

I think a better analogy is Audi and Skoda.
Essentially the same components with a few minor differences its just you're paying for the 4 rings.

It's Apples clever brain washing marketing that makes people believe they produce the Ferraris of the technology world.
  • Get a Surface Pro 3 or 4 they're better than any other tablet around because you can use them to run anything.
We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.
  • I see the Medion Lifetab at Aldi, has come down in price, by, IIRC, £25.

Maybe they're struggling to compete, against the Hudl.
