If the EU had a common policy on immigration then Germany couldn't have done that perhaps, depending on how the rules were framed.

When presented with thousands of people and open borders. Then the economic refugees would have headed for Germany whatever. Germany has never experienced immigration on such a scale before. Germans may experience the effects of immigration in the same way parts of the UK currently have. May change peoples views. Integration isn't always easy.

I am led to believe that there are millions (literally) of Turks in Germany already. I think the Germans have plenty of experience of mass migration.

However, they are certainly reacting against this migration – there have been massive demonstrations in Germany, even though the press here has suppressed information about them. It's a situation that will become more extreme with ever greater numbers of these migrants being allowed into the country.

The Turks arrived in Gemany over a very long period of time, so could be integrated to a certain extent, and there was capacity for them in German industries. This is quite different – we are seeing potentially millions or tens of millions from the Middle East and Africa wanting to gatecrash their way into Europe, a situation that cannot be allowed to continue. It also needs to be borne in mind that these are people who won't integrate and many don't like the West (unlike the Europeans who can travel freely around Europe) – and will like it even less once they realise it is not the paradise that was sold to them by the vile people smugglers, who need to be shut down, something I'm sure could be done if there was a will to do it and if people could work together instead of thinking about their own power bases and scoring points off each other, etc.

The concern is also that those who are allowed into Germany will soon be allowed to travel around Europe, and will then head straight for the UK and its generous benefits. That's a key reason for leaving the EU in my books.

Well the German unemployment rate is 4.5% and seems to be falling so it would seem likely that there is plenty of work in Germany. Given the aging profile of the population in Germany:

    http://www.tatsachen-ueber-deutschland.de/en/society/main-content-08/demographic-trends.html
Three trends are characteristic of demographic developments in Germany: a low birth rate, increasing life expectancy and an aging society. For more than 30 years now Germany has been witnessing few births: With slight fluctuations, since 1975 the number of newborn infants has been approximately 1.3 children per woman. This means that for 35 years the generation of children has been smaller than that of their parents. High rates of immigration to Germany prevented the overall population from shrinking accordingly. At the same time, as in other wealthy nations, life expectancy has risen continuously, and is now 77 years for men and 82 years for women.

That's fine for Germany, then. They can take them all and make them stay there – but they should be obtaining them directly from the Middle East, if that's the people they want, not burdening the rest of Europe with them when most countries categorically do not want more migrants from that area.

Given that Germany is the richest large country in the EU I can't see many wanting to leave.:money:

Why would they want to leave a prosperous place that welcomes them to a damp dark island that apparently doesn't?

Any chance you could post on the Scottish thread? It would save a lot of time.

People thanking a banned user with a dodgy name posting from abroad and half their junk posts removed?

    Great standard of debate
