But why should the govt subsidise childcare when the cost of childcare is almost the full wage earnt? Why is that seen as a good idea and looking after your own children seen as a bad idea?

I agree it's daft, but the reason governments think it is a good idea is because it increases GDP.

But if their child is away for 30 hours a week then they are not looking after the child during 6 hours a day. So why can't they work?
You mean at school? We were discussing childcare subsidy for pre-school children

Didn't someone posted that this was due to go up to 30 hours for 3 yo?
  • Sorry to confuse you Mumps and Evenasus. I held a full time job form 16 until my daughter was born when I stopped working to bring up my daughter on money that we have earned and saved. I did not claim any benefits whilst not working even though I could have. I went back to work part time (school hours) when my daughter went to school full-time. My point was I have worked all my adult life and have never expected nor wanted handouts. Regardless of how I phrased the two separate posts, I think my point was clear.
I always avoid posting on places as to comment on my memory is neither nice or necessary, it was a misunderstand of what I meant.
  • Apologies for all the spelling and grammar mistakes in the above, I typed in a rush!

I'm sure neither meant any offence. Some people easily pick up inconsistencies in posts that don't support the original impression.

You've made it quite clear now from your explanation above. :)

The government subsidises income, isn't it better for a person to keep working or to stay at home and their career to be halted. Maybe they will struggle in years time to even get a job at that level and have to start from the bottom again?

Childcare is expensive and even if someone does want to stay in work, this can be the deciding factor that forces them out of work.

Do you mean you can't work more hours because you'll receive less tax credits?

That's been the problem, people not wanting to do anything that makes their benefits reduce.

The aim should be to get off benefits asap.

I love the way people presume I could get off benefits.

Im a single parent working FULL time . thats 36.25 hours. I drop my kids at the childminders at 7.30 and pick them up at 4.30 . Both are at school but im still paying 400 a month childcare ( this is averaged over the year to stop ctc getting confused.)
Like blonde bubbles says , this enables me to work , to carry on paying my taxes , morgage. The only other benefit I have is a council tax reduction. Thats it. I have no loans and no overdraft . I budget to the hilt.

These cuts are going to make it harder than it already is. Being a single parent , i have to work ( My stance anyway) To show my children that you cant sit on your bum all day .

Do self employment from home doing something that makes a profit of at least NMW. That's how it would have worked before Tax Credits allowed people to pretend they were SE to get extra benefits and avoid the job centres.

Unless you have a successful self employment and savings this is just silly.

Why would I quit my job in the hope that a venture would work , that would still require a buisness loan to get started up..
