Correct. The plastic bag costs them less than a penny. Charging 5p for something that costs less than a penny is a rip off. Stores that care about their customers give them away free.

If a store is not prepared to give me a bag for uncooked meat that is leaking or may leak, I would take my business elsewhere.

The store is free to charge what they like. I am free to shop where I like.

The store has to charge by law for single use carrier bags.

If you purchase meat from the butchery counter that is more likely to leak, I would ask for a bag at the counter, those bags won't have handles so aren't carrier bags anyway. If its packed in store and just cling film wrapped on a polystyrene tray then again ask at the butchery counter for a bag to wrap it.
Most pre-packed meat is heat sealed and if its leaking, don't buy it, it won't keep to the shelf life anyway.

Failing to negotiate and entering into a contract that you are unhappy with is foolish IMO.

But I wouldnt throw a hissy fit and expect other people to tidy up behind me if those negotiations didnt go the way I wanted.

6 5P bags could get you a Value/Smartprice curry sauce or almost a pack of doughnuts.

Will I heck pay for bags.. I'm ramming everything in my backpack (the back is one of the strongest muscles in the body and prefer it on my back than my hands going red/purple!). Smile at the woman holding the 5P bags as I go off into the wilderness.. Scored !!! =)

The whole point of the charge is to reduce the use of plastic .Your post proves the policy is working.

    If you purchase meat ....

I'm well aware of that, but a bag used only to carry uncooked meat isn't a SUCB! The store can legitimately give you a free carrier bag if they want to.

You are indeed free to shop where you like. The "childish" bit is getting into an argument and leaving all your shopping at the checkout

LOL this made me laugh !! can just imagine them stomping their feet like a petulant sulky school kid.. and leaving their families shopping for the week over a 5P bag charge !! :D

My point was more that if you are buying pre-packed meat it is sealed and therefore it won't leak. If it is leaking don't buy it. If you are buying meat packed in store (and therefore not sealed as well) then ask for a bag at the meat counter to wrap it in.
If you are worried about the outside of a pack being dirty, don't worry, the trolley & basket are already dirtier anyway.

I bought a birthday card last week, i was given a thin plastic bag that had handles, and it was intended for single use. But they never charged for it. ........ Why ?

    Wasn't Card Factory was it?

Have bought a couple of items in there recently and been given bags but when I looked at them they were obviously mis-printed and mis-cut seconds so assumed they were just using them up!
  • I was charged 7p for a larger plastic bag at Boots - is this allowed? Couldnt find anything regarding bag size - thought they were all 5p.

Shop is perfectly entitled to charge anything they want over 5p- and most will definately charge more for a thicker / longer lasting . 5p is a minimum amount
