  • I don't mind paying for them, however as you are paying for them I think that they should be made of more sturdy material, you need to double them up to get any use out of them.

being a bloke I do not carry a hand bag or man-bag -
There have been a lot of times that when walking pass a shop I see a deal or if I go to buy a sandwich I may decided to buy other items and not having a bag I have to pay 5p which really annoys me as I feel it just another tax -
I do not believe the Government has really done anything except force business to impose these charges and forward the cost to the public. therefore not a penny out of the Government pot - while they had their fancy meeting and lunch at tax payer expense deciding this.

over Xams I saw a good deal on wrapping paper - I had no intention or plan to get wrapping paper but did - I had to pay for a bag - I then when to got a sandwich and drink, for which I had to pay for another bag, while walking back to work I saw some discount on clothes - and yes - I paid for a bag.

I could not use the bag for the wrapping paper as it was a bag designed to hold wrapping paper, for the sandwich I was give a small bag - not big and there was not way I would be able to fit the clothes I brought in any of these bags - so ended up paying and extra 15p..

I know it not much - but it the principle - the public seem to be paying for everything..

Have you heard of pockets? Most men carry a bag or two in their coat pockets as seen myself as I work in retail. In the warmer weather, fold one into your trousers pocket.

Noticed Card Factory have bags with no handles now so don't need to pay for these. Even a man bought two sheets of wrapping paper and the cashier put the sheets into two bags, openings together and tied a laggy band in the middle.

Sounds like the end of the world is nigh. I must arrange my affairs.;)

So you winge about paying for bags.

Did you mind paying for the guy/girl working for the council cleaning services in your local area who used to clear up all the discarded bags before the charge came in?

  • Not sure if mentioned already, but couldn't the shop 'charge' for the bag and at the same time give an equivalent 'discount' off the shopping if they wanted to, or am I being too simplistic?

They officially don't get to keep the money from the bag charge (well, what doesn't go into their coffers under the guise of costs of administering the scheme anyway).

If I don't happen to have a bag with me, I simply don't bother to buy stuff :p

  • Hello, newby here & first time poster. :)
It's an interesting thread about the 5p charge.

Every place I have been has always asked if I would like to purchase a carrier bag.
Except a candle shop I recently bought from. It's an average sized independent shop that sells a well known branded candle. I purchased 2 medium jars, some small candles & holders. I was expecting the "5p" question before I paid. It didn't come, they just put the items in quite a large bag & told me the total. When I looked at the reciept they hadn't charged for a bag whatsoever & the total of the candles was correct, nothing added on.
I assumed ALL shops/businesses had to charge for bags as it was now the law? Or are there different rules for independent shops?

Only shops with more than 250 employees are compelled to charge. The rules are explained here

Was it a paper bag? In England they don't need to charge for paper bags.
