No it certainly wasn't a paper bag, it was a large strong carrier bag as I had heavy candles to carry!
The shop has a few outlets across the local region so not sure how many are employed, I doubt there's 250 though so possibly why they don't charge then."The truth is of course is that there is no journey.
We are arriving and departing all at the same time."0 -
Not sure if mentioned already, but couldn't the shop 'charge' for the bag and at the same time give an equivalent 'discount' off the shopping if they wanted to, or am I being too simplistic?0

Only shops with more than 250 employees are compelled to charge. The rules are explained here
Thank you, I'd forgotten that. Yesterday I bought a cauliflower in an independent shop and wondered why they'd given me a carrier bag without charging.
It may seem illogical but I'm happy to provide my own bag in supermarkets and the like but when I shell out for some expensive clothes or similar I expect them to be wrapped free of charge. I strongly expect that to happen soon in the more expensive clothes shops (if it's not happening already) as it's a mark IMO of good customer service. Plus they have Primark to compete with!:rotfl:0 -
I got a free carrier from the fruit and veg stall:) I usually buy the ten pence bags better value and stronger, got loads though :(keep forgetting to bring them to the shops:(“Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

supermarkets should change their bags to brown paper ones and they should deal with the cost...its like booking into a hotel and them charging you for a key....0

It's an interesting thread about the 5p charge.
Every place I have been has always asked if I would like to purchase a carrier bag.
Except a candle shop I recently bought from. It's an average sized independent shop that sells a well known branded candle. I purchased 2 medium jars, some small candles & holders. I was expecting the "5p" question before I paid. It didn't come, they just put the items in quite a large bag & told me the total. When I looked at the reciept they hadn't charged for a bag whatsoever & the total of the candles was correct, nothing added on.
I assumed ALL shops/businesses had to charge for bags as it was now the law? Or are there different rules for independent shops?
Seems shops can choose if they want to charge or not to me, PS i love 'them' candles0 -

The brown paper bags dissolve in rain, and are very harmful to the environment in terms of gases produced during production and decomp.
They are not some harmless green alternative that so many persist in thinking.0 -
I see, never realised that, i assumed brown bags were 100% re-cycleable and just made from 'tree's...?0
