How long will it be before we have to put a £1 coin in a slot on the basket before we can take it around the supermarket.

Seriously, don't the people who take these baskets realize how much they cost to the supermarket and all our food bills when they pass the cost of replacing them into our food bill.

All because they are too tight to buy a 5p bag.

How are people getting the baskets out of the store in the first place? There's a place to leave them at the checkout... It's really quite obvious if you don't.

I wouldn't mind if I had to put a £1 coin in for a basket. I don't think it will happen..... but I wouldn't mind. You just get it back once you've done your shopping. It would only bother those people who are planning to steal the basket and will lose their £1 when they do.

Tidy Z roll of 40 carrier bag pedal bin liners is what Mamam mentioned, I've been praising them here on MSE for some time. We've found the thickness very good and loads better than normal pedal bin liners. A good substitute for the free carriers.

Available in Poundworld, Poundland and Savers (0.79p).

Are these the ones that are cotton or lemon scented? (blue or yellow roll)

I'd rather use a "shallow shopper" than a basket anyway so if I ever forgot my bags, I'd be taking the SS to the car anyway. I have tried to reach saturation point with trolley coins too, so I should never be stuck for something £1-sized.

Because some people find it very inconvenient and aren't convinced by the endless chorus from nannying, authoritarian 'Greens'.

People complain and laws get changed. It's how democracies operate.
Very inconvenient?. How difficult is it to take a bag or pay 5p. Its a very minor inconvenience that anyone with a basic level of competence should be able adapt to. The law is intended to reduce litter and wasteful plastic bag use. Its very simple. You've used every excuse possible to defend free plastic bags and now you think if you complain enough your free bags will return. Ridiculous

In your opinion. In mine, what is is ridiculous is imposing a charge which raises millions in VAT for the government and a host of unspecified 'charities' and inconveniences people, with no convincing evidence that it will achieve anything other than allow naive people to believe they are somehow 'saving the planet ' - possibly the most facile slogan so far this century.

One thing is certain. We will never agree.

But you would have had the till receipt for the purchase.

A bag also used to be a sign that you might have bought it or were trying to hide the fact you hadn't.

I was talking about these: Link

I've not seen them in a scented variety but they could now be available as such.

We had the bag charges for a quarter of a year so far. The number of customers moaning at me they can't get this motion of bringing in their own bag. How hard can it be to fold a bag into a small pouch and stick at least one per pocket per coat and per man/handbag (if use the latter)?

Maybe shops need to prosecute those that steal baskets and trolleys. You read in the local rag people convicted of nicking £20 of meat. Nicking a basket or meat or anything else is theft.

I was in Decathlon the other day (with bags) they have small carriers at 5p but when out of interest I asked for the price of their stronger larger bags also available at the till, I was told these are 50p - that's rather excessive IMO. Ikea blue bags are cheaper and considerably stronger (I've got some that are 15 years old, have been used a lot and are still going strong).

Unfortunately the nearest Ikea to me is at Lakeside, about 50 mile round trip for me.

I Go to Morrisons and buy their reusable larger bags for 39p.

These bags are the only bags I have seen which allow you to put a cereal packet in them width wise.

    And they are bloody strong.

But be careful though, as you can overload and barely be able to lift them.
