Paper bags aren't as environmentally friendly as many people think.
See http://www.theguardian.com/environment/shortcuts/2011/dec/20/paper-plastic-bags-which-best
I was shopping in Publix in Florida the other day and the packing assistant asked me if it was OK to use a plastic bag for packing my shopping (oh, if only we got American service in the UK). She was surprised when I gave her a brief summary of why plastic is more environmentally friendly.0 -
As requested by - DigForVictory - I'm a Welshman. Firstly I'm amazed at the amount of posts on this topic. Why haven't you got used to it by now!?
.
Because some people find it very inconvenient and aren't convinced by the endless chorus from nannying, authoritarian 'Greens'.
People complain and laws get changed. It's how democracies operate.0 -
If 29 pages about a 5p bag charge isn't a first world problem, nothing is!
Nobody should ever get packaging from a shop anyway. Use your own bags etc. that you are happy with and can reuse.
If what you buy is overpackaged, complain about it and leave the surplus behind in the store, for them to sort out.
C'mon folks, it's the 21st century and the earth is getting steadily warmer....If what I said helped you, please "Thank" the relevant post. It cheers me up somewhat..0 -

Proof, as if proof were needed, of how bonkers a Green can get. We've heard 'Anthropogenic Global Warming' (curiously absent for over 18 years now) blamed on a lot of things - but never before on shopping carriers!
Any excuse, eh?0 -

The Earth continues to warm and cool cyclically as it has done for millennia.
The 5p plastic bag charge is just whistling in the wind, and it worries me that some people will think it will make a significant difference to anything.
I am not convinced that the current global warming is caused by greenhouse gas emissions. It may well be, but because scientists, governments, and environmentalists have lied about and misrepresented the facts, I am not convinced by their assertions.
I do however care about the environment, and I believe we are destroying our planet. Its not just greenhouse gas emissions, its the pollution of the rivers and oceans, the destruction of the rainforests, the urbanisation of natural landscapes and the destruction of the other species that share this world with us that worries me.
By faffing around with trivial initiaves we continue to conveniently ignore the real problem which is overpopulation.
If you really care about the environment, don't add to the overpopulation problem.0 -

I think you misunderstand.
Wearing a seat belt, not drinking and driving, not smoking in pubs and restaurants , all started from 'trivial initiatives'.
It's easier to implement and build up to the big initiative when you start on a small part. The more I live, the more I learn.
The more I learn, the more I grow.
The more I grow, the more I see.
The more I see, the more I know.
The more I know, the more I see,
How little I know.!!0 -

Change the record, it's beginning to get boring.
Go away armchair internet crusader. The more I live, the more I learn.

As the bin bags we have are either the big black things (suboptimal for toting around the house) or the (again handle free) things sold as binliners? If a child empties, um, "sticky rubbish" [to pick a euphemism at random] into a Bag For Life I get a bit irate & for more goodwill peace on earth etc to stand a chance, I need to find something to chuck rubbish in that doesn't cause a ruckus.
Please advise!?
Speaking as a wise Welsh woman although now exiled from the Principality (so I hope it counts:D) I've just bought a roll of carrier bags from the £ shop (Poundworld). There are 40 strong bags with handles.
I'm another who re-used the 'free' carriers as bin liners so the new law is just adding to the number of bags used by me. My plan is to use the roll of bags I've bought for shopping first when possible. I'm going to put a couple in each of my handbags and coat pockets.0
