What about nitrogen fixing? Subsidise peanut farmers?

Now that the FIT bonanza is over, we need another numbskull political initiative to give money away.

Peanut farm on your roof, house or car, to offset your NOx emissions.

Why should anyone be surprised, everyone works to the limits set by legislation - school teachers teach their kids to pass SATs Tests, driving instructors teach you to pass the driving test, VW build a car to pass the EU emissions tests. There is a constant war between legislators and the public who suffer from over bearing rules (and don't get started on Health & Safety Legislation !).

VW owners bought their cars for low VED & great fuel economy - my Golf gets 70 mpg without effort, KEEP THE NEW POLITICIANS OFF MY CAR !.
VW built a car that cheats the emission test. If VW, the maker of the car you own, hadn't done this but another car, bus or lorry maker had, would you be so defensive?.
"The public" include people whos health is affected by diesel emissions and who benefit from emission controls. I doubt they consider pollution control rules "overbearing". Its likely your own health has been affected by vehicle emissions.

If another maker had sold a car with lower VED & better fuel economy I wouldn't be driving a golf now

An interesting analysis of the cost of extra pollution from diesel VW cars in the US.

There may have been anywhere between 16 and 94 deaths in the US as a result of the increased NOx pollution from VW cars over the last seven years. An annual cost of $40m to $170m

The article suggests the higher population density and higher diesel usage means that there could have been 'hundreds' of deaths in Europe as a result.

Numerically, car accidents kill far more people, so objectively, we should simply ban cars.

All crime is committed by Life,
    therefore all Life is guilty,
    and the sentence is Death.

    Judge Death.

Wrong! You haven't considered what the alternative would be.

For example, road deaths are around one per 100 million miles in the US. If the 482,000 diesel VWs were bought over the last 7 years had an average of 40,000 miles on them - that would be 19.2 billion miles - or 192 people killed.

Some states have death rates that are half average, others double - but let's assume that the car has 50% bearing on this - i.e. driving a new VW could make you twice as safe compared to say, an old pickup or compact. If half the 482,000 drivers traded in said old pickup or compact for their new VW - then that ownership could have saved the lives of 48 people.

And that's the problem when you deal with such tiny numbers. We know the extra NOx probably killed some people, but owning a modern VW probably statistically saved some too.

Surely the affected cars are patently 'not as advertised'. Is there a time limit on claims under that regulation, and given that the fact of them being not as advertised has only just come to light will any time limit be set aside? If so....many motorists including me could be weighing up the chances of a class-action getting them a right to refund or replacement with a vehicle which IS at the emissions level they were claimed to be at.

So hand on heart you can say your primary reason for buying the car were the promised emission levels?
