Still struggling to work out what to do with my boxes of books, the current choices are car boot, Oxfam (and get 2 x Nectar points for every £1 raised) or church jumble sale. I've listed a few of the non-fiction ones on ebay but I am thinking the rest will be split between Oxfam and the church.
It's not money-making, but I do something called bookcrossing. It's a little bit of fun, really! You register the books online and then write the book I.D in the book and release them in the wild! Sometimes you get people who 'catch' them which is fun.0 -
I wanted some advice... I have loads and loads of old books. Nothing special, just fiction paperbacks.
dependent on what types of fiction paperbacks they are might be worth a look at the sites. Do you have a smartphone? makes life easier when can zap barcodes

Procrastinater wrote: ȣ194.07 so far much of it from ebay. I downloaded my Paypal a/c from 01.10 and applied ebay's 10% on relevant items, then took off my postage and Pp fees - so a couple of days ahead of the game so far.
I tend to list as Fixed price btw - That way you get 30 days and the date of listing / ending doesn't matter.
However a lot of my items are "Collect only - cash on collect" and ebay will not end the listing on a "Buy it now" unless they pay by Paypal ! That of course incurs the fees - and I have spoecifically requested C on C - does anyone knwo of a way around this issue (Well an Issue for me !):(
There is a sticky thread on the ebay forum that specifically addresses the problem of cash on collection sales. You could try seeing if you can remove the 'immediate payment required' option from the BIN listings, but for many people that won't work as ebay have set up a trial where all BINs are immediate payment- and the seller doesn't have the option to change that. However, assuming you don't show a postage method then the ebay fees are the same whether or not they use paypal - you pay 10% of the invoice and if there is no postage added then there is no charge on the postage.
Obviously sellers want to avoid paypal due to the paypal on collection scam, but it is near impossible to avoid someone using paypal at some point. It is all covered in the sticky thread but if you do refund the paypal postage then not only do paypal retain 20p in costs you are also likely to get a defect.
Even with straight auctions you run the risk of someone paying by paypal as that will show as the default option on all listings. A seller can offer cash on collection but needs to be careful not to indicate that it is the only payment option or even that it is the preferred option.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Another £10.50 added for some more little sales.
I've spent tonight listing on ebay, but without details (naughty me). Off work poorly so I'll be spending tomorrow actually filling in details and adding photos. All due to end Sunday night so hopeflly I will finally get round to selling some higher value items and actually make some decent sales. Fingers crossed anyway!

Yes thanks Soolin, I'll pop over and go through that thread you recommend
I do have the box opting for instant payment unchecked already - but they seem to take no notice of what You want - just how to maximise their take out of your money !
I was thinking that if you left the option in for the punter to "make an offer" (which generally speaking I don't) then accept the offer, that may bypass the problem - but of course you'd be getting less for the item in any case which rather defeats the object. :rotfl:
Thanks too for the encouragement lynnejk -I've got a couple of quite big items to put on ebay, but they're buried under mountains of other clutter, so I'll just have to dig them out and get them on there.
A quick "Guesstimate" in round number shows a little over £246 so far this month, so nicely on track so far - but It's not easy is it ?
I'm noticing though that making the effort and getting even relatively small progress does wonders for my own internal mindset which is much more positive than before i joined with you good people last month - THANK YOU ALL for that ! x :beer:0 -
