We've obviously got very different ideas about the meaning of marriage. As far as I'm concerned, it is a partnership.
I couldn't agree more, only in this case it appears she has been more of a sleeping partner, sat at home watching TV. In my opinion a partnership should involve equal responsibilites. By the sound of it this lady has spent a long time doing next to nothing, with the childcare responsibilities out of the way she has been milking this relationship, now she is bleating about what she 'deserves'. She could have gone out and got a job, it sounds like she had little else to do, but she chose to sit around doing nothing.

Sadly as you say the law will side with this idle lady and she will most likely walk away with an awful lot more than she really deserves.

   ..........I am speechless!!!!!!!!!

Feisty_Fairy if you are of the female gender then you ought to feel throughly ashamed of yourself?!!............
As if the female role in the home and childrearing arena are not undervalued enough within modern society as it is?!! (Why do you think so few men take on the role, it can be crucifyingly difficult and thankless, that's why?!!)

We don't need stupidity like this here?!! ......Go post somewhere else where you will be assured the company of your fellow philistines!

Slavery was rightly banned many moons ago?!!!
However, some men remain callous enough to take the view that by simply re-branding it and giving it a slightly softer image, such as using the term housewife (knowing what this engenders), that this sly modern twist somehow gives them the authority and arrogant right to, without conscience, happily inflict the same injustices on a fellow human being here in the 21st Century??????!!!!!!!!! Astonishing!!!!!

I'm behind her all the way:T.......She's deserves a future too!..... especially in view of all the hard work and commitment she has put in to the relationship, children and the home.

All the Luck in the World to her!
She doesn't deserve such lousy treatment, my heart goes out to her!:heartpuls

  • It's clear that from the lack of information in the OP there are two ways this can be viewed:

    1) - This woman has spent her life looking after the children and, once they grew up, ensured that the household ran smoothly.

    or

    2) - This woman looked after the kids when they were young and has since spent her life doing nothing whatsoever and living off the sweat of her husband's brow.

If I may suggest, perhaps the original poster could provide more information about the situation between this couple lest we descend into more "Feminist militant!", "Chauvinistic Pig!" which, whilst entertaining to read, isn't all that helpful in terms of advice!

I imagine the OP has run for the hills after the first barrage of abuse she received when she came here asking for advice.

while that may help more moral condemnation of one or other of the couple, i really don't think it's that relevant to the question... she's legally entitled to half of everything after 40 years - whether she cooked and cleaned or watched daytime tv every day...... this is meant to protect women who do give up careers and look after children - and it would equally well protect any men if the positions were reversed.

i'd suggest they just try to deal with it amicably as i'm sure a lot of money could be wasted on solicitors in a long drawn out divorce!

just had a thought - maybe lots of bra burning feminists (me included btw :)) may have come to this thread with a slightly defensive mindset because the thread is titled '... wife threatening to take everything' rather than taking the half of everything that the law entitles her to?

  • Isn't there something about a 'special contribution' where it's deemed that if one party brought substantially more to the relationship then they get a larger share?
