Five OS Pleasures in your day today
Options
Comments
-
1. Managed to get through the work day without throttling anyone (a major feat, lol).
2. DD has made me really proud by already going up a grade at reading! Last week she brought home books without words, today she came home with a reading diary and a note from the teacher saying she was very good at letter sounds and could now have books with words
3. Buying a gorgeous dress at M&$ and using a gift card to help pay for it
4. DD disliking the bread I'd made for her sarnies in her packed lunch, so tomorrow morning I'm going to make tortilla wraps as I know she loves them, and have put the bread in the freezer for later use...or feeding the birds! Waste not, want not and all that....
5. Withdrawing £35 from P&ypal which will make its way into the mortgage eventually. Need to find more books to sell!!0 -
Reverbe I held off from joining Facebook for ages but just recently signed up...next to babies and mail order catalogues it's the biggest time waster, isn't it?! Nice to keep in touch with family though
Hope you see more of your sister newlywed, I lost one at 16 and my older one has been terribly ill so I value every second spent with her. I get really upset when my DGD's argue but of course it's just what sisters do
((((thrifty)))) I know you know this already but the best advice I was given was just go with it and know it will pass. Hope you'll soon feel on top of it again
Speaking of lawnmowers Ollie the one I gave away on freecycle was collected by the lady who I got it from last year! Sounds odd but in fact she wanted it for her mum, whose mower had broken down. It was perfectly fine but doesn't have a grass box and raking is getting a bit much for me now so I got one with a box. She mailed me this morning to tell me it was hers - and there I was on Sunday evening demonstrating how well it works to its original owner :rotfl:
My blessings
1. checked my Saturday lottery ticket and I won £10 :T, Riches indeed
2. Emptying my purse to put the shrapnel in the savings jar and found a £10 note folded up with a receipt...it's worth checking if you usually just throw the receipts away as I often do. Waiting for the third £10 now
3. Managing to dig a circle of soil under the lilac tree where I'll plant daffodils. Had to water it several times but it eventually got soft enough to turn over
4. Seeing a half inch crack in the car windscreen where a chip had been repaired last year, I phoned the ins co and they arranged for a new windscreen to be put in tomorrow (Weds). They could have come tomorrow but I'm out so Weds it is...that's service.
5. Cleaning the outsides of the ground floor windows, can see out of the kitchen one now. It's always the dirtiest as the cats sit on the window ledge.
Night night n God bless all, sweet dreams and hugs all round

1. Making HM laudry liquid, always find this strangely rewarding;)
2. Load of washing and a lovely spring day, rain in the morning clearing into lovely sunny day:j
3. Watering the garden(undercover pots) with saved water.
4. Harvesting silverbeet for tonights tea.
5. Cooking up the boys(dogs) a meal and as always they know its for them:D(dont know how they do this)

Morning all  - ooooo it was dark when I got up this morning (6.45am) and yesterday was officially the first day of autumn. Can't say it's actually 'cold' but I'm NOT sitting with the back door open as I normally do !
bella - well done on your rubber chicken.
newlywed - one of the best things about mse/os is finding that we're still able to eat properly/well just before payday lands and also able to help my DD/dgk's out if necessary. Well done on your 'family' weekend - don't see mine often enough.
Reverbe - sounds like you've found a really nice circle of friends there- it's great when we meet people who are on our 'wave length'.
Caterina - welcome back from your travels. Good luck with the radish growing - I've not had much success with it - obviously doing something very basically wrong. They grow lovely but are only like a slightly thicker root when I pull them. Perhaps I should be feeding them with something to make the root swell into a 'bulb-shape'. Then again, not sure why I've bothered amnyway, as we don't really like them all that much :rotfl:. One bulb finely sliced into a salad does the two of us .
flutterby - good to get some produce from your parents. Will you perhaps be able to have a grow-bag on your balcony - or maybe a small planter for some tomato plants/salad bits next year?
thriftyscotslass - ((((hugs)))) for you - we have an 8yr old ASD but haven't come across 'gemstones' yet - a joy yet to come. He's very good at getting stuff out, setting it all up and then abandoning it, as he has no imagination for playing. This weekend it was a entire trainset - lost interest (as per usual) as soon as it was all connected - grrrrr! Well done on being up-to-date with your washing/drying/ironing :T.
Kittikins - Great self-restraint there, girl . And well-done to your DD on her reading abilities - isn't it lovely when we 'see the penny drop' - their facial expression is fabulous :j.
sparrer - good on you for freecycling your lawn-mower - and :rotfl: at you passing something back to its original owner. I didn't think of checking on there to see if there was one going begging. I'll have a nosey later - I'm due a 'goodie' from them as I've given away some really decent stuff recently.
puss - :T on your HM laundry liquid. And :rotfl: at your 'boys - don't they just think that EVERYTHING being cooked is for them anyway? I know that my Sandy used to sit and stare at the cooker as long as there was anything being made - even though she knew where her cupboard was, she always 'lived in hope'!
1. My car boot high chair arrived yesterday morning - it was this oneMother of dgs's 2&3 was well-impressed when she saw it!
2. OH's birthday yesterday and all my kids remembered - 2 arrived with cards/pressies and the other one who was working rang to wish him Happy Birthday. I'm so pleased about this as they struggled to accept him in the very early years of our relationship as he was still drinking back then.
3. Had a lovely salad for evening meal with profiteroles for dessert (shop-bought, I'm afraid- not faffing around with choux pastry, cream and chocolate sauce on a work-day).
I'm afraid that's about me done for yesterday - will have to see what today brings.
(((((hugs to all))))) - love Ollie xxx0 -
Hi all
Where is everybody? Last post today was this morning at 9!
Reverbe: tried to reply to your pm but your inbox is full!
Puss14: could you please share the recipe for HM laundry liquid? I would like to give it a go. Thanks.
Ollie: I grow radishes more for the leaves than for the bulbs, although I have never had a problem. Try to plant them in light sandy soil and with some space between them, see if it works. The leaves are great sauteed in oil with chilli and garlic and then used to dress pasta.
Kittikins: well done your daughter for improving on her reading, I am sure that once she gets the hang of it and starts to like it, the reading bug will catch her and then you will have a job separating her from her book!
Sparrer: good luck in finding the third tenner! It is so good when the Universe/Divine Providence/Whatever sends us prosperity isn't it? It is not even about the money, more about having it confirmed that we are going to be provided for by the bounty of life, I think!
Anyway, here are my five:
1 - Yellow stickered cinnamon and raisin soda bread for breakfast.
2 - Found a wide mouthed thermos flask with its two inner containers, all in perfect conditions, in a skip round the corner from home. Only a couple of days ago DD had expressed the wish to take her own food to her Uni classes. Thank you Universe for listening and providing!
3 - My first craft class of the year started, it is called Make Do And Mend and I fixed a tear in the back slit of an old skirt I had (10p at jumble sale) and added a nice ribbon border. Very smart, feeling proud!
4 - Discovered that my second craft class (Thurs. pm) is cancelled but there are still spaces in the Tues pm so I transferred. This is even better because it means I do a full Tues (10 to 3) working on my craft and sewing projects! This afternoon I made a shopping bag, the first one I ever made just off the top or my head, no model or guidance. Feeling Extra Proud!
5 - The tomatoes that grew wild in my front garden are huge, ripe and ready to eat.
6 - The Borlotti beans in the back of my garden are also ready to eat, tonight it is going to be Pasta e Fagioli soup (pasta & beans) and tomato salad. Yummy, can't wait, off I go to cook.
Love to all
Caterina xxxFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Olliebeak: thanks for the idea, yes I might try sleep pillows next time.
Mine for today:
1. Steak and ale pie made in the SC
2. Trip to Poundland to buy stuff for Operation Christmas Child boxes (we send three, one from each of the kids to a child of the same age and gender as them).
3. The new Dan Brown book for £4.99 from Amazon
4. Baking two bara briths, one for now and one for the freezer
5. Getting the house clean and tidy, then sitting down for a quiet half hour watching Market Kitchen with a cuppa before picking the kids up from school.0 -
1. DD loved her 5th day of school, I can't quite believe she's only been in Reception for 5 days, she's still gloriously excited but also exhausted each night and after the initial shock to my system, I'm embracing the new life too!
2. Realised this morning that the dress I bought yesterday for £45 is similar to something I picked up reduced in Mr A's for £10, so guess which one is going back! I can live without 2 gorgeous sea-green woollen dresses....
3. Took out 3 brand new books from the library at lunchtime, one being the new R/ver Cottage cookbook, looking forward to getting stuck in.
4. My first day back in my "home" office and lots more people noticed my weightloss - cue heart-warming compliments.
5. Reading 2 new books with DD that she was given at school today - is it just her school, or do children get lots of goodies these days? Not complaining, but I don't remember it being like that back in the mists of time when I was young, lol.
Caterina - your soup sounds scrumptious! Hope your DD gets to enjoy the leftovers in her new Thermo$ tomorrow
Ollie - wow, the highchair looks lovely, what a great find!
THrifty - big hugs, hope you've had a good day and that the darkness has lifted for you.0 -
1-watching baby DGD play in her walker I got from boot fair for £2!!
2-Making potato n leek soup for dinner, with tons left over:p
3-Getting Goks book from library
4-chatting with a friend this aft
5-dying my hair:D"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"
(Kabat-Zinn 2004):D:D:D0 -
No more tenners Caterina, but all my blessings are rolled into one today and worth ten times more than I could have hoped :j
All the Blessings...
Went to my pulmonary rehab class this afternoon (yes, I'm still learning how to breathe ) where there was a talk by one of the organisers about what's on offer after the course finishes next week. First, they're holding a session every Monday for 20 weeks so it doesn't just end, we can continue to get the benefits of the course.
Then we can be referred by the GP to a fitness class at a local health club. The first few sessions are 121 to device a plan for every individuals ability, then a small group session as long as we want to attend, a week, a month, a year...
Finally there's a walking programme, short, slow and easy walks for beginners, longer ones for the more experienced, all escorted and the majority culminating at a tea room or pub for refreshments. Dogs and other family members welcome, should be fun!
Amazingly very few people, including myself, know what the NHS offers in the way of help for sufferers of many different illnesses. It was interesting to learn that the past seven weeks has saved thousands of pounds in hospital care...they estimate that at least two of the 12 people on the course would have needed to be admitted to hospital for 3 nights or more had they not attended the sessions.
The above is all free except the health club, which will cost each individual the princely sum of £1 a week, that's definitely OS!
Night night n God bless, stay safe (and sorry if I've bored you)

Morning all :hello: - well the weather is still continuing to be mild around here and STILL no signs of any rain either. Not bad at all for mid-September - having said that we are using the fleece blankets in the evenings.
Caterina - well I didn't know that you could use radish tops to cook as a veg - talk about learn summat new every day :j. What do you do with them - steam 'em? I think my problem with the radishes could have been that the soil wasn't sandy enough (just used general purpose compost) and also possibly too close together. Oh well, try again next year with better knowledge
. wtg on finding the wide-mouthed flask - that's a brilliant one AND what you were needing too
.
helyg - I once saw something about sleep pillows made from the woven ribbon technique (Woman's Weekly in the 70's) - similar to this but much smaller and edged with lace to finish them off prettily - http://hubpages.com/hub/Weaving-Your-Home-Decor-Spell-WIth-Woven-Ribbon-Pillow-Covers---A-Crafts--Handiwork-HubMob-Hub - the ones that they showed were some in white and some in shades of lavender/lilac/pale green - more like THIS one actually: http://www.dotcomwomen.com/crafts/wedding/woven-ring-pillow.shtml
What a lovely thought about the Operation Christmas Child boxes - I think I may pinch that one and do it with my dgk's. I've got some shoe boxes that would do nicely.
Kittikins - yeah - schools have changed! I know that my old school was STILL using the reading books that I'd had until well after I left and they weren't new when I used them - if I close my eyes, I can still see the orange/blue drawing illustrations in them. 'Kitty see Mother' - 'Mother see Kitty' - 'Kitty see baby' - 'baby see Kitty' - oh dear- Beacon Early Readers. I've just been googling and found one of mine for sale on e-bay and put a bid in - how sad is that - I'll let you know how I get on :rotfl:.
candygirl - hey another bootsale nana! Great places for baby equipment aren't they. Hope she enjoys her leek and potato soup - my little Katie loves my home-cooked scouse!
sparrer - Well done, girl! It doesn't seem 5 mins since you started at those classes - and now you're 'graduating' :j. Our local PCT does similar exercise/health programmes - would love to join something like that, but not able to yet as I'm still working. Can imagine me pushing Katie/Billy-blue-eyes in the pram on some of those health walks!
1. Had an invitation to our local 'Older Persons Voice' meeting. These are arranged through Age Concern and are about over 55's having their say in how locally provided services are run and the affect that they have on the ageing population. Usually good meetings and this particular one is about exercise/health programmes for older people - how apt, eh sparrer lol. And lunch is provided - which is always a good freebie.
2. Got a Team Meeting later today and I'm on minutes taking duty. So difficult to keep focussed and make sure I don't miss anything. Our Line Manager is on sick-leave at the momen. Tripped over some building materials in work (no notices around) and fractured a couple of ribs, a bone in her hand and another in her elbow - also worried about her knee-cap - hasn't stopped her from phoning us all up though . We'll be getting one of our Directors to facilitate the meeting, so we all have to be on our best behaviour.
3. Have taken some minced beef out of the freezer for this evening's meal - chilli with peppers and kidney beans chucked in served with pasta .
4. OH found a box of choccies from LAST Christmas inside the base of our spare bed - knew I'd been missing one of them at the time! Couple of months out of date - but what's that amongst friends :rotfl:.
5. Decided to wash the large cushions yesterday. How come 2 of them washed fine and the other 2 went all bulky afterwards? Took ages to sort out into shape again . Still they're nice and plump again now - at least for a short while until the dgk's come and bounce on them again
.
That's me done for today, so I'll pop back in again later and see how y'all are doing - love Ollie xxx0
