Oh my goodness, mineallmine and Primrose, the rag and bone man used to come down my grandparents road in London, and it was exactly like that with kids being sent out with bucket and shovel. The pop lorry wasn't far behind, we gave the empties back and got thruppence (3 old pence for the young 'uns amongst us) for them. The butchers boy delivered on his bike, the laundry man collected our brown boxes of linen...happy days
Yes Reverbe, do let us know how things go. Y'know I used to be terrified to talk to anyone, thought the whole world was better than me, then I learned from a psychologist friend that all you have to do is ask a few simple questions about the person you're with, and they'll happily chatter away about themselves for ages. After all, it is everybody's favourite topic! It does work, so worth a try
I think you've done brilliantly Kitchenbunny, ironing, 10 mini crumbles and saving the mushies is a great achievement. You deserved to read your book
I know what you mean Ollie, living in can be a bind at times especially when you want to use the office /laundry/refuse room etc. If I so much as showed my face on my day off I got roped into sorting something out. I'm sure my residents had 'warden radar' .
My blessings...
1. I can move around my kitchen again now that the damaged new freezer has been taken away...it was beginning to feel like Curry's whoopsied corner in there!
2. A NSD, only went as far as the garden and it was lovely out there so I sat and contemplated the work I need to do
3. Some of the children in the square had a car wash...it cost me £2 and I have to do it properly tomorrow but was worth it to see them having fun outside on a warm day
4. A free sample of anti-wrinkle cream in the post. It was very kind of them but they're on a loser if they think a sachet of cream will get rid of this lot :rotfl:
5. Reaching the top level in a game I've been playing for some time, it took ages but I got there today. Yes I know, I really should get a life!
Night night n God bless all, stay safe

1. The sun shone all day where we were.
2. Went to the seaside in honour of DH's 65th birthday, which is actually today, but the forecast for yesterday was better.
3. A long walk barefoot along the beech with lovely warm sand beneath my feet.
4. Blew the budget for once and had a lovely meal in a nice restaurant.
5. Just sitting in the sun and 'being', a real change for me, I'm usually 'doing'.0 -
Morning all :hello: - Oh well another day and my snuffles aren't quite as bad today, so fingers crossed that I've fended off the worst of it Thank you all for your good wishes
.
Reverbe - Sorry I didn't realise it was your birthday last week - hope you had a good one. 'Arsenic and Old Lace' is one of my favourite ever films - just love those old 'screwball comedies'. Dear old Cary Grant had such a gift for comedy as well as being totally drop-dead gorgeous . One of my Christmas pressies last year was a boxed-set of Ealing comedy dvd's that OH managed to pick-up at a Car Boot Sale - in immaculate condition, I might add. Have you been brave enough to speak to the 'eye candy' yet - go for it girl
.
flutterby - Neighbours - what are they like, eh! But they did you a favour so not too bad. What a sight, one of those vintage cars on the road. We live by Knowsley Hall and its sometimes used for exhibitions/conventions etc. Recently there was a vintage vehicle rally and we saw some really incredible vehicles arriving in the morning and leaving later in the day - many of the drivers/passengers were in full edwardian costume.
Kitchenbunny - erm what do you mean, girl - not had many successes. Those are brilliant - salvaged/prepped/frozen mushrooms; cooked 10+ individual apple/blackberry crumbles; finished your ironing AND found time to finish your book - sounds like you're doing fine and dandy to me :j.
Patchwork - That jam making session definitely served you well there. Well done on your time with spent with OH - country walks are delightful at this time of year
.
mineallmine - well done you on supporting your local butcher :T. We've just had one open in our small shopping centre. I get a bit dubious though, when the sign above the door says ' Master Craftsman Butcher' and yet there's loads of stuff prepacked with printed sticky labels in the cabinets. I've seen this type of thing in a local meat warehouse - not that it isn't good though. Have to say though, that he does have a range of 'speciality sausages' that he has samples of on the top of the display unit for folks to try.
zarazara - sounds like you've had a wonderful saturday - hope sunday is just as good. Give your cats a stroke from Auntie Ollie please - I'm missing 'purry cuddles'.
Primrose - I'm another one who remembers the horses and carts from years gone by. We had a guy who did knife sharpening AND shoe mending. There was also a back-street smithy not far from us, so maybe we got some of 'traffic' heading there as well - certainly had to watch were you walked crossing the roads.
sparrer - Unfortunately no 'communal bit' on this scheme - my office is my 'box-room' (6ftx7ft) but there's so much stuff in there that I hate using it. But in my previous one (3yrs ago before this was built) my flat was above the communal room and kitchen. In the days before smoking restrictions it used to drift up between the cavity walls and into my bedroom via the airvents  - my asthmatic OH hated Bingo Day! I also used to pray for a secret escape tunnel to the nearest bus stop :rotfl:.
Fabio - What a lovely way to celebrate your DH's birthday- I can almost feel that sand if I wriggle my toes
.
1. Did my freezer inventory and oh dear - what a shocker ! I didn't have a clue about the half of what was stashed in them. Needless to say, last night's evening meal was entirely freezer contents . OH had Chicken Bhuna, I had Buttery Chicken, served with pilau rice, mini Indian Snacks and Chapatis. All had been whoopsies :j! Got the makings of another 2 or 3 Curry Evenings still in there. Everything is now written up in an Excel Document AND colour coded so I can see at a glance how much meat, chicken etc is in there - how's THAT for Brownie Points :rotfl:!
2. Had a quiet day yesterday with just a brief visit from DS1 accompanied by his g/f's son (age5).
3. Finally prepped and froze the remaining veg that I bought last week and didn't have space for at the time. Runner beans, carrots and parsnips have now all joined the other stuff - but the fridges are now looking better.
4. Also prepped a pineapple that OH bought last week - 'cos he fancied it at the time'! I've asked him NOT to impulse buy but it's like talking to a brick wall ............ but I do LUUURVE fresh pineapple  - suppose it really weren't too bad for 80p
5. Sprawled on the sofa in the evening with my tissues, inhaler stick, fleece blanket and a hot toddy to watch 'Home Alone'- love that film. Then switched over to watch the Agatha Christie evening on ITV3.
6. Read a bit of my book in bed (Mrs McGinty's Dead by Agatha Christie) before dozing off with the lamp on. Got a dig from OH around 4.30 telling me to 'turn it off' :rotfl:.
Feeling so much better this morning that I'm gonna take myself off to the car boot sale to see if there's any bargains to be had. Would like to find a baby's high/low chair for when it's feeding time in my house - so you never know .........
I'll pop back in again later to let you know what goodies I've found - bye for now - love Ollie xxx
Not sure what happened to my post - I tried to insert an emoticom that didn't link, deleted it and everything got underscored. I've tried 'highlighting and remove underscore' but to no avail. Oh well maybe still got a bit of 'fuzzy brain' syndrome going on
.
And now, lo and behold, the underscore is STILL in my typing window but NOT on the actual posting page - curiouser and curiouser!0 -
Olliebeak - doing a freezer inventory is a shaming experience - in our house anyway. All those odds and ends tucked away to avoid waste, which you do to salve your conscience, even though you know you'll probably never fancy them when you're desperate to have a 'saving money' day. Our spreadsheet is marvellously efficient for the first few weeks and then sadly falls increasingly into disuse, which then makes it no longer fit for purpose!
So far this week-end:
1. Visiting village fair in the sunshine. Meeting lots of local people there for a chat and buying another batch of winter reading from the secondhand bookstall.
2. Gentle gardening in the sun - so peaceful and making the most of the Indian summer.
3. Giving a large bag of tomatoes to next door neighbour. She really loves the yellow ones.
4. Washing the spare bedroom curtains in the bath this morning (They were dirtier than I thought ). Too lazy to take out all the plastic hooks so they will now gently drip dry outside. I will iron them when damp, rehang them, close them and open the bedroom windows so that that the breeze can blow through them, letting them continue drying in situ. I've used this technique before and it works, avoiding having curtains lurking around, not quite knowing what to do with them to avoid creasing if they're still a little damp.
5. Roast lamb lunch planned, with our own runner beans and carrots.0 -

Evening all
My OS pleasures for today:
1. Having a lazy day pottering round with no need to do anything
2. I walked over to the sea (it's 30 seconds away) to sit and read for half hour, and watch all the people enjoy the sunshine.
3. Finishing my book. Though now I have the dilemma of what to read next!
4. Making roast potatoes for the first time totally by myself! I've helped my mum/nan make them before but never made them myself. Now I'm living on my own I'm pleased they turned out lovely. I'm veggie so made a veggie roast dinner and all tasted great
5. Knowing I don't have to be in work til 11am tomorrow
have a good evening

Hello, everyone, hugs to you all and I hope you're all well x
Some of my recent pleasures:
1. Doing quite a bit of cooking this weekend - bread, herby rolls, savoury tofu loaf, veg chilli. Love cooking!
2. Finding a new home for my current foster cat - whilst it was hard letting her go (she didn't go willingly) I know that she will now have a loving, permanent home :j.
3. Completing my first fanfic short story (not been brave enough to publish it online yet, which annoys me ) Must get my butt in gear and do that this week.
4. Making arrangements to catch up with a friend who I've not seen for ages (she's been off setting up her own business, which is going well )
5. Lovely sunny weather here this weekend in Bristol.
6. A long evening of my favourite American crime dramas last night on TV.
7. Meeting my decorator to make arrangements for her to start work in my house. Now I know paying her isn't very MSE, but there's lots of work for her to do and I haven't the time, skills or inclination.
Think that'll do for now. Have a goood week everyone xLife is not a dress rehearsal.0 -
Hi everyone, darn it, got to go to work tomorrow after 2 weeks off *sigh*
1. Having less of a hangover than I deserve after going to a fantastic party last night - given that (a) I rarely drink and (b) even more rarely go out, I did let my hair down last night, good company, great music and I didn't come home til 4:30am (luckily the party was on my street so not too far to stagger, lol)
2. DD and I had a lovely cuddle on the sofa whilst watching a DVD at lunchtime
3. Got straight back into my diet (again - oops!) today, hopefully I won't have done too much harm by drinking like a little fish last night, but at least my head and heart are telling me to keep going with the diet!
4. A lovely friend came over to see us this afternoon and the three of us went out for a walk and to collect some conkers
5. Just about to go and make some easy wholemeal bread as I've realised DD will want a packed lunch for her first day being picked up by the childminder. Phew!0
