    1. Had a massive cooking session this weekend - bought loads of meat from the butcher and have so far frozen 50 meals, ready for evening meals when I get home late from work.
    2. Had a lovely time chatting with the butchers; I'm glad to support such a great little local business.
    3. Went to a friend's house for a cuppa and had fun playing with her little girl.
    4. Met a friend for coffee this afternoon - and she paid :D
    5. Bought some seeds ready to plant when I get round to picking up some compost.

    1. Woken by Tiggy-tiger this morning at 8.15am - crying for food. It's brilliant to see him actually hungry and eating properly after the past few months. Just hope he begins to put some weight back on again.
    2. For breakfast - hot buttered toast (proper butter NOT healthy stuff !) followed by porridge. Fingers crossed that the goodness of the oats cancels out the butter :D.
    3. Found lots of veg is the second fridge (put there 2 weeks ago and forgotten about). Spent the morning prepping and putting into bags for freezing. Leeks, carrots, carrot&swede, parsnips all now frozen - enough to keep us gong for ages :j.
    4. Slow Cooker on from 9.00am with a pan of Scouse. Added dumplings around 5.00pm - really delicious. Managed to 'salvage' some left-overs before OH got in there ;).
    5. 2 loads of washing done and dried on the airers - lovely fragrance wafting through the downstairs now :D.

Following on from yesterday's blessings about DM sharing her Bingo winnings. I heard from my sister this evening that DM had been again this evening with her friend and won £300! There really is no stopping this woman!!! Already told sis to send mother for next week's lottery tickets ;).

    Five for Sunday:

    1. Oranges and cafetiere of real coffee.

    2. Searching for some online recordings of a folk song I need for something I'm working on and coming across a folk guitarist that I never knew existed - had a lovely time searching and listening to his music while I got on with other things. Now know what to ask for for birthday presents!

    3. I've decided to start a savings pot to buy a melodeon which is like a little accordion and is used to accompany morris/folk dance and the like. I borrowed one years ago and loved learning to play for the short while I had it. I've never thought of saving for something expensive like this just for me, just for fun, and it will probably take for ever, but the savings pot has started today. KarrieBee, I really understood what you were saying about playing your sax. I've let my music making go and it used to bring me such joy. I've realised that I can pick it all up again with the instruments I still have packed away.:D

    4. And linked to that, I came across the trailer for the film Morris: A life with bells on which was a treat. Made me laugh a lot. :D

    5. Getting all my craft materials sorted and packed up again. Have set myself some goals next week for sorting out how I can run some independent workshops.

    Sweet dreams.

Hello zippychick. Scouse is the 'national dish' of Liverpool - scouse/scousers! I think it's origins lay in Irish Stew, but over the years it got changed a bit. Every household in Liverpool will have their own 'proper version'.

I start off by soaking some 'soup and broth mix' overnight, then rinsing well the next morning a few times till the water is clear. The meat part of mine is shin beef (but I know of others who would use breast of lamb or mutton - in my opinion breast of lamb would be way too fatty - but each to their own!). The veggies for mine are onions, carrots, swede, leeks, potatoes (parsnips and celery optional) (all chopped but with the potatoes in slightly bigger chunks) and a couple of beef oxos, veggie oxos, celery salt and dried mixed herbs for extra taste. Quantities can vary, depending on how much meat you have and how many people it's meant to feed. In times of real struggle, there can be a really small amount of meat and far more potatoes. I also add dumplings to help things stretch a bit.

This is usually brought to the boil and simmered for around 3 hours in the biggest saucepan that you possess, cooked in a pressure cooker or done in the Slow Cooker. The potatoes are meant to 'fall' a bit to help thicken the scouse. If it's cooked in a saucepan on the hob, you need to stir it regularly every few minutes, or it can 'catch' on the bottom of the pan.

It warms up very well the following day and lots of people reckon it tastes even better then - IF it lasts that long ;).

My grandmother used to make the same dish but instead of dumplings, she used to put a pastry crust on the top and call it 'Hotpot' - but she wasn't a Scouser!
