  • Fightsback;69202399 - Correction, Linux is the most used and installed OS in the World

I've seen some crazy and at times exasperating claims by mad-disciples of linux over the years in this domestic consumer group of MSE but the above claim escalates it to a new and ludicrous level. As an ex linux user, as many will REM right here in this group I've long spoken out against such exaggerations and untruths.

Obfuscation in your #43 and obfuscation again in #50.

    I said :
An alternative OS to MS has been preached by disciples and evangelised by phanbhoys decade after decade, but all the MS alternatives lumped together only amount to less than 5% of world market

You then claim """ Linux is the most used and installed OS in the World""" .. .. .. this is untrue.

Billion android phones for starters, just about every router ever made, the whole of google, the whole facebook, most internet servers - shall I go on ?

It may come as a surprise but all computers don't come with PC written on them. Just because you don't see Linux doesn't mean to say it's not there, it just goes about it's business unseen and without a multimillion marketing department to blow it's trumpet.

If you want sympathy go and hold hands with Ed bott because you won't get any from me for shattering your dreams.

    - I said "an alternative OS to MS has been ..........etc"
    - linux in my opinion is a kernel, not an O/S, the bits bolted onto the kernel make it an O/S
    - to claim that linux is the most used and installed OS in the world is wrong
    - most people here don't know what linux or a kernel is, everyone in the world accepts the definition of an O/S
    - except Mr Fightsback, hence obfuscation

I know the difference Richie OS is maps, O/S does not describe Mrs DCM and my kernels are huge

    Poll question
I have upgraded to Windows 10 but reverted to previous edition
is ambiguous sort of , since I and perhaps others on the insider preview may have reverted to a previous build, not a different edition of Windows i.e. 7/8/8.1

Ah I see , you are back peddling now on what you consider to be a Linux OS, you want to base it strictly on kernel definition. Alternatively I could describe windows as a distribution and not strictly an OS.

    Classical OS defintion :

"the main program in a computer that controls the way the computer works and makes it possible for other programs to function"

We could argue semantics all day, however the fact remains there are more penguin kernels than NT kernels if you so choose to describe it thus.

Looking forward to your next post and your favourite word of the week "obfuscation".

May I suggest Roget's Thesaurus to expand your vocabulary, it will assist in avoiding tedious lexical repetition.

    Have a nice day.

I'm not back peddling at all I'm trying to get you to address your assertion that linux is more than 5% of the world market without exaggerations, obfuscation, untruths and a constant conflating of what serves as an interactive O/S by most users in the world. Linux preachers have always abused the use of argument to defend the 'cause', you are clearly aware that 95% of the world does not use linux to browse email, play games and do what most readers in this group do on windows products. That's why I've always said that phanbhoys destroy the reputation of linux and turn people off its use - shame on you, like most verdoma you can't see anything above your own sandy horizon.

Right, why don't you say the desktop PC market which is what you mean. Yes that is true for the desktop market but not operating systems.

As for playing games, browsing and email:

    http://uk.businessinsider.com/android-1-billion-shipments-2014-strategy-analytics-2015-2

It also powers most smart TVs

    Powers your skybox:

    http://www.ph-mb.com/products/sky-fw-tool

    Powers your Virgin media box

    Powers your router

    Powers most NAS's

    Powers the LSE and NYSE

    The list goes on.

A computer is not just something designed by IBM using an OS stolen from Gary Kildall for kids just to play games, email and browse.

Chances are that this Website and Forum are running on Linux as it uses Apache.

It is you who is obfuscating, muddling, darkening, misleading, hiding, covering up, camouflaging and disguising the truth.*

*I've given you some new words to play with.

Linux based OS's are the most installed OS's in the world, deal with it. It's just an engineering solution to an engineering problem and a very scalable one at that.

97.6% of the top 500 computers in the world use Linux (another 2% Unix):

I went back to using Windows 8.1 because of problems with Windows 10. One of my programs will not run properly in it. Also, the Nvidia driver causes strange behaviour and gives error messages. I don't know what I'll do in the long-term yet but the Windows difficulties caused me to take a closer look at Linux.

It's Linux Mint at the moment. If this is typical of a Linux OS, it's not bad in my opinion. Firefox, Thunderbird and Libre Office come pre-installed, as do programs to view/edit photos and handle music files. Other programs are available from the Software Manager for just about any job ..and they install by clicking the 'Install' button. That's much better than wondering what to do with a downloaded 'tar.gz' file. About the only 'ease of use' issue I've wished for is being able to easily create a Desktop shortcut to any file.

However, I've put a fair amount of money into Windows photo-editing and vector drawing programs. Since I know them, they are quicker and easier to use. It's back to Windows for these and I tend to stay on it once there. I'm a bit of a gamer too and have a number of Windows only games installed. I suppose not everyone would be affected by those points though and if not, a Linux Desktop OS could be a viable option.

I have upgraded and kept Windows 10
Last time I used Linux (Mint ... 14 or 15 I think) it still wouldn't work nice with my Nvidia GT540M graphics card, defaulting instead to the onboard Intel HD3000 graphics. (I gave up trying to get it to work).

Until (or unless) that problem is resolved then it's not really an option for me as 3D games and other GPU-intensive programs struggle.

I do still have it installed as dual boot though - handy for file recovery if Windows crashes for any reason and I've been lax with my backups. :)
