Why's this thread going on for 3 pages?

It's straightforward. Politely ask them to take it down. If it doesn't come down in an appropriate time frame, take it down yourselves.

Give it back, of course. :A

The size of the fence/garden's irrelevant.

    Nice on Dave :-)

    Small garden?

With an alleged 150 ft fence down one side. ;)

The picture is taken from the side. It goes on for 150ft with the garden cut in half with a trellis - to separate our garden from the childrens.

Even if it were 3 fence panels and 50ft - what difference does that make.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

Fences as supports: Can I hang things on my neighbour's fence?
Fences as supports: Can I use my neighbour's fence as a support for my own plants?
Fences, appearance of: Can I paint my side of my neighbour's fence?

Only if your neighbour gives you permission to do so.

Leaning things against your neighbour's fence, hanging things on your neighbour's fence, even using your neighbour's fence as a makeshift retaining wall, will place a much heavier burden on the fence panels and supporting posts than they were designed to bear. The consequences of such actions are easy enough to predict and you will be liable for the cost of any repairs. On top of that you will still have to do, and pay for, the work that you did incorrectly and which resulted in the damage to your neighbour's fence.

In short, anything you do to your neighbour's fence without your neighbour's permission
    - including staining, painting or applying preservative to your side of your neighbour's fence -
    amounts to criminal damage.

Regarding the last point. I really did not know that, I guess it makes sense when you think about it though. I have been painting 'my' side of the neighbours fence for over 10years, it has not been mentioned once as a problem - I now wonder if they harbour negative thoughts about me vandalising their fence....I thought I was helping to preserve it!

I think the only time a neighbour would have any issue with a person painting their fence would be if drips go through and ruin the paint job on their side.

As you say, you would be helping the preservation by painting it.

If your neighbour is happy with the result, it's not a problem but you should ask before painting their property. Definitely do this if you get new neighbours.
