Not for sale though.

An interesting point is made by Porsche:
My bold.
So the question remains; assuming that electric cars are made in volume will the car or the battery be commoditised (or both!)?

An interesting point is made by Porsche:
Porsche faces another challenge as it moves into electric vehicles.
The company has set itself apart from the competition through what auto analysts call its stunning engine design and engineering.
Electric powertrains are far less complex than a combustion engine, making electric “engines” easier to copy and harder to differentiate.
“This is the question for us: how can we develop an electric vehicle that is different from the competition and adds real value?” asked Mr. Müller.
Porsche’s challenge, he suggested, is to make an electric engine with the raw power of a gasoline-powered Porsche sports car.
My bold.
So the question remains; assuming that electric cars are made in volume will the car or the battery be commoditised (or both!)?

My ev has a range of about 90 miles driven sensibly. Driven as most people drive their porsches it would get about 40 miles.
Just saying that 300 miles may be at a steady 56 on the motorway....
Oh and using the fast charger reguarly is supposed to do dreadful things for battery longevity.
Re the engine characteristics, electric motors deliver all their torque throughout the rev range so differentiation might come from 4 wheel drive, electronic management and engine power (which hits battery life) rather than engine characteristics.I think....0 -
The interesting bit for me other than yet another leap forward in battery technology is that Porsche is torn between getting out an electric car and getting out an amazing electric car.0

I'm surprised the WSJ sees this as new news. It's been known for sometime that the next generation of EV's will have a range of 300 miles + It's been a bit like the early mobile phones i.e. the 'brick' At the time it was said it would take 10 to 20 years before the battery technology was developed to make them considerably smaller! :rotfl:0 -

What percentage of Porsches get anywhere close to their performance envelope in the heartlands of their sales?
(which is mostly London/Home Counties in the UK ... ignoring a few Man City footballers who manage to wrap a Porsche or 2 around the trees of Cheshire!)
This all may be moot of course. If the others get out their electric cars then Porsche will be forced to follow. It will no longer be a question of commercial choice.0 -

- Components companies (will probably exist in a similar format, composition may change to reflect new specialities).
- Battery company (this bit is new, and may not be won by the traditional auto companies)
- Motor/Drivetrain company (replacing the engine companies we have now - I would expect auto companies can win here even though there is a more of an electronic emphasis, but I agree differentiation will be more limited and so it may be structurally less profitable)
- Platform/System Integration and Brand company (as per now - some brands will continue to have 'value')0 -
whoosh right over my head0

My PHEV gets about 25 to 28 miles on a charge...0

Bizarrely the thing that stops me looking at electric cars is the design. Apart from the tesla which is not really very practical, all the other manufacturers seems to deliberately make their cars ugly... trying to discourage them next to their normal cars??0

The famous mitsubushi that is making them change the tax rules because it is so popular and not really very green at all?
You're right.
I went to look at one and it was completely misleading.
If anything, the one I saw was a silver colour. No green whatsoever.
Don't expect accurate fuel economy figures. They were too optimistic on the diesel one too.0
