I think turtur might mean a turtledove. (Turturem is the accusative).
Testudo means tortoise and turtle....apparently the Romans didn't differentiate between the two.
I will check though. Not sure if testudo is the right form of the noun. I need the nominative.
Ah. I knew I should have known better than to trust Google translate. Have you ever played that game where you type something in English, translate it to another language then translate back to English. You get some weird and wonderful results.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0 -

I don't know why i sucked so much at French, i started learning it from about year 5! My grandparents paud for me to go t an after school club. It did help to a degree, come year 7 i already knew all the basics, i just struggled once we got to GCSE. I wish i could have done German (but they alternated years so i didn't get it) as my dad is near fluent in it, and does business a lot over there so i could have done an exchange. Instead i had to learn Russian for a year. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I'd have liked to do Russian. My drinking alter ego was named Tatijana and she was Russian. The only trouble is, I can maintain a Russian accent for all of 5 minutes before it slides into Welsh or South African.
I have a problem with languages. I speak French and Spanish (as well as useful Portuguese phrases about turtles and spoons for the king) but somewhere along the lines the parts that store these have gotten tangled. 2 or 3 years ago we were on a tour and a French couple were also there. They didn't speak English and didn't understand so I was attempting to translate the basic instructions for them. Only they seemed confused. I was starting my sentences in French and switching seamlessly to Spanish in the middle. I can now not speak French or Spanish but Franish.:rotfl:
Because of confidence issues I read and write well in a few languages but speak them poorly.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0 -
Code, I'd like to check with my Latin dictionaries, but it'll have to wait until I'm back in England!
So you're a monkey, are you?I like it!
By the way, I sort of did talk about mutant ninja turtles in the same conversation as I am not a turtle! We'd been talking about painting, and the chap said he wasn't Michelangelo, so I said Ah! You're not a turtle then, and then had to explain that Michelangelo was a ninja turtle, (slapping of forehead!). So then I said that I can't paint, so I'm not a turtle either! (More slapping of forehead!)

I did French at A Level but barely remember any now. I have to think a lot about speaking it and if I had to have a conversation with someone I'd just freeze and not think of what I want to say until much later! I'm a lot better at reading it but still very rusty. I keep thinking about doing a refresher course but just don't have time/opportunity
How lovely to have little Escapette join the fort! Hope you're healing well Welly. Are you taking arnica tablets and wearing giant pants?!

Hey Welly - gosh, you brave and wonderful woman! Big hello and welcome to escapette - which keeps making me want to call her smurfette! Hope your family are behaving and not invading! I am so pleased for you that it has all happened and you are both ok and now you can start the new phase of your life! how are the hormones? Are you feeling ok with escapette or do you still have concerns? {squish}0

Congratulations Welly
Code, you are not alone with randomly switching languages, the amount of French that creeps into my Italian class is rather high, because we all speak it to some extent. I'm actually the best in that regard as I've hardly used mine since my O level which was 30 years ago, but even so there will be the occasional 'avec' or similar in the middle of an Italian sentenceI think it is more likely to be
Testudo non sum

So... subject pronoun not needed in Latin unless for emphasis? So presumably the verb is conjugated in a way that makes it redundant then? And you mentioning nominative and accusative brings back not so good memories of learning German at school. So Latin has complicated verbs and cases like German as well? Our school did offer it at O level but didn't teach it before then, so I never even considered it. I sense it would have been useful as a grounding for all the other European languages.
Stressful start to the day for me, turned on my computer at home at 7am to find hundreds of "Houston, we have a problem" type emails auto-generated overnight by one of the servers I look after, so came straight in to the office and am dealing with that, and will have to do a load more work after close of business this evening to rectify things properly (it's the computing equivalent of kind of lashed together with tank tape and cable ties at the moment) as the server will have to come back down again, which I can't do during the UK/Europe working day without getting lots of complaints from our customers.
The problem was at the hosting company and outside our control, it's the knock on consequences of it that cause all the work and massive stress for me, unfortunately. One of my biggest problems is the amount I stress about this sort of thing, I never show it on the outside but inside I'm **PANIC!!** as I deal badly with getting complaints from thousands of people.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
Have you told them to turn it off and turn it back on again?
I think the being out of control bit always causes far more stress than when it's something you've [STRIKE]bolloxed up[/STRIKE] fixed yourself. Especially when the irate people at the other end don't care but just want it sorted.
Hope it turns out not to be too traumatic a day for you.

Morning my lovelies,
Not a good night or start to the day. So off to the duvet fort to snuggle up with a pepsi max. I will bring jaffa cakes for all but me. As I am not in the mood to eat.
Hugs, squishes and handshakes to all who need them.
Yours

Afternoon all
Penguin regarding yesterday's events:
The funeral was lovely (was as lovely as one can be, but ykwim) and very well suited to him. They played the F1 music at the end (as they did at his wife's) as they were big car fans, and he had an MG coffin.
Turns out it was a massive heart attack.I feel bad for even thinking it might be the other thing I suggested (I wasn't the only one, but still), and his brothers and SIL's said he was just starting to come to terms with things and looking forward to life again. So so sad.
At one point in the service they played a song that my Dad really loved, and that set my Mam and me off, and also numerous other things did too. I felt bad that at my Dad's service, I didn't cry at all, I didn't even have a bottom lip wobble, (and I am one of the most emotional people I know sometimes), yet when I go to other people's funerals, I'm sobbing away. I know it's because you relate things to your own personal situation and rather than crying for the deceased, you're crying for people you've lost. It really upset me and shook me that I didn't even cry at my Dad's, but yesterday I was sobbing like a baby....I found it quiet hard tbh.
Then as we were walking away, one of his SIL's (who recognised us from last time) held my hand and said "have a good life", and that set me off! Luckily I held it together until we walked away!
End penguin.
As Arkwright would say, "it's been a funny old day!".
Hugs to anyone who needs them and walkers crisps (yes I know I'm addicted!) for anyone in a savoury mood!0
