I know Melly. It's personal to me so I am very sad. When I first started writing for Melody Maker at 18 I was sent to review a private farewell party for a booker who had worked in the business for many years, a lot of famous people back then turned up to sing. Silly me stood up right next to the stage and next to speaker and started feeling rather dizzy after being blasted by several bands and squashed by a big crowd. I staggered out and tried to make my way to the bar and Lemmy grabbed my arm and asked if I was alright. He took me to the bar and found me a seat while I babbled that I was meant to be reviewing a band thinking eeeeeek! It's Lemmy! He then laughed at me and told me that the yellow card hanging around my neck which meant I got in for free was also a pass to a secluded area and I didn't have to be in the crowd at all. Oops.

Feeling like an even bigger idiot at this stage in front of A Very Famous Person I offered to buy him a drink. Much laughter from Lemmy ensued once again as he pointed out he got drinks for free and he asked me what my name was and what I would like to drink? I said Southern Comfort and lemonade, he ordered me a pint of it!!! Then Ian Dury came over to talk to Lemmy and he introduce me and we chatted for a while about the area and jackets believe it or not. Lemmy told me that a certain member of a certain band was supposed to be on stage but he had taken so much coke backstage that no one could get any sense out of him. So Lemmy had agreed to play an extra set instead at the end of the evening.

He told me to wait at the bar and came back afterwards, then told me to come backstage with him. There we met Nick Lowe and Lemmy let me hold his favourite guitar. Then he grabbed me for a quick kiss, I was stage struck and didn't complain! After the kiss he said he had to go now so he would call me a taxi home and pay for it which he did and he told me to stay beautiful. He was so very kind with no pretensions at all.

I will always remember him fondly.

What a lovely story WaS! I was shocked when I found out this morning, he was one of those you assume will go on forever. I had heard he was supposed to be a lovely bloke.

How do I get my own back on sibling and nephews who decided hiding an alarm clock in my room set for silly o'clock was a great idea?
Having said that, it's a marginal improvement on last time when the wake up call involved a child and a violin.
