Not a fan of antibacterial stuff tbh. I have some hand gel for dog walks but I rarely use it outside of that. This whole antibac thing has gone way too far and I think it's why people have lower immune systems now. There's even antibacterial laundry stuff now - what's the point unless the clothes will be dried in a sterile bubble? Much better to shore up your immune system to ensure your body knows how to handle bugs and viruses. Unless of course you're in the hospital or dealing with open wounds or have a weakened immune system or OCD (had a friend with OCD who used to wash her hands and use antibacterial gel so much as part of her rituals that her hands were cracked and bleeding and sore. It must have been so painful whenever she used the gel but she had to do it - it's why I hate this trend of people saying 'I'm a little bit OCD' when in truth they just mean they like to clean).

I agree in principle, Code. Research has shown that the best way to stop transmission of viruses and bacteria is a thorough soapy hand wash.
    Basic, basic hygiene.
However, I have had so very many upper respiratory tract infections and full-blown chest infections over the last three years, which at best, leave me under par, and at worst, send me to bed for anything from 1-3 weeks, stopping me from carrying on my normal life, interfering with holidays, making me miss many things I've paid for or wanted to be part of, that I've decided it's war this winter!

Most of this type of infection is viral, so antibiotics won't work. A great many of these viruses are transmitted by touching surfaces. So it doesn't matter how good your own hygiene is, when the person in front of you hasn't washed their hands after blowing their nose. That's why, when I heard about the anti-virus foam, I decided to try that this winter. You're absolutely right, though, that in normal circumstances, it is much, much better to build up your own immune system, and not to over-sanitise, particularly with children.
I once knew someone who spent their life disinfecting their children and stopping them having contact with animals or anything much outside. They were constantly ill, whereas mine, grovelling around on the carpet with cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. were really fit.

So, where I have access to soap and water, I use that in preference, but otherwise, I'm now going to try the anti-viral foam when I've been in public places, and see if it helps to keep me well.
If I needed to go into hospital, I would use it there, too.

I have used First Defence (nose spray) a lot in the past, but it didn't seem to stop me catching things. I've just discovered Coldzyme, which you spray into the throat, so am trialling that too, both as a preventative and at the first signs of anything. It's not cheap, but I don't care, if it can stop me spending most of the winter and spring in bed feeling rough!

Just so long as people remember that these things are additional to washing hands properly, and most definitely not instead of!

Woken up too early today and just can't get warm no matter what I do.

The antivirus ones sound like quite a good idea especially if you use public transport. Hope it keeps you healthy through winter.

  • Also up way too early, was in work at 7.30  . One would think that with the mornings being dark now I would wake up between five and six less frequently, not every morning.

  • MU, you are absolutely not a bad person. :A I guess when people can't see an obvious disability, some people will question it. You did absolutely the right thing though, you explained calmly that you had a pass and why. It must be hard getting confronted like that though, especially when you've had a sh*tty day :(

Pyxis, is this the stuff? http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Advanced-First-Aid-Anti-Viral-Hand-Foam-200ml_1036207/ I'm popping into Boots today to collect my advent calender, I'm going to buy one for my Mam. She hasn't got a spleen. She's on high doses of pencillin (I think that's what it is?) because basically without it her immune system would be zero. I might even buy one for myself as I don't want to end up with it going to my chest and giving another asthma attack :(

Mu, what the others said, you're not a bad person! You were absolutely right to remain in your seat. Hope you have a better day today!

I was out at a work party last night and am feeling the effects of too much cheap wine this morning! :o Off for breakfast shortly which should perk me up!

It's payday for me so I may have just accidentally splurged on new clothes (although I used a code so got £103 worth of stuff for £53!:money: ) One of the things in my order is a pair of dungarees and I really hope they look good, I love dungarees!

Hope everyone else is well today.

I'm shattered. Escapette had her first jabs yesterday and spent all yesterday evening screaming. She eventually sheriff but was agitated in her sleep so I couldn't settle.
She seems better this morning but now I feel like a zombie.

I know the jabs are necessary, if the way she had been is only a tiny bit like what the actual diseases are like then I really feel for anyone who comes down with the real thing. Still feel guilty for putting her through it, and knowing she will have to do it again and again.

Aww, big hugs for escapette... and for you welly. Admittedly I have no first hand experience but I think parenting is basically 90% guilt that you're doing the wrong thing and 10% being so sleep deprived you're past caring :rotfl:. I feel guilty for not letting P cat have treats this week - he was just eating them and leaving all his actual food so have had to cut him off.... and I feel terrible! Can't even meet his eye :rotfl:. It's very clear that I wouldn't be able to cope as an actual parent!
  • She eventually sheriff

I think your autocarrot might have had a moment there Welly, unless she's got career plans already ;)

Please don't feel guilty about the jabs - you are protecting both Escapette and any children who cannot be vaccinated because they have serious medical problems :)

I am incredibly tired today, but my bar shift went very well. Not sure the usual barman is gonna like the fact I tidied up, rearranged the glasses and gave everything a good clean though...:rotfl:

I feel rather manly today - I bought a shed for the cheerios! Putting it up could be fun.

    You OK Calley?

    Welly,

Thank you for your concern and to have time to think about me. As I know you have a lot going on with the little one.

I am sort of ok. My meds are wacking me out. I am not sleeping well and tired all the time LOL!!!

But they seem to be stopping the anxiety. But not the thoughts that I am have done something wrong or bad.

Christening was on sunday and went well. Husband got to meet his other grandchild for the 1st time.

Also don't have much to say as nothing really going on. I am reading and thanking people.

Hugs, squishes and hand shakes to all who need them. I will be in the fort probably in the corner, wrapped up in a duvet fast asleep :rotfl:

    Everyone take care.

    Yours

    Calley
