Still, doesn't make sense how a timing chain guide can 'fail'. Maybe it was not bolted on tightly to the wall and came lose? Still doesn't make sense

I had a belt tensioner and guide fail on a Fiesta.

Its a mechanical part, cars are made in their millions, every so often a part won't either be manufactured or fitted to the correct tolerance and it will fail.

25k is not suspicious. Some owners do low mileages, like our second car which has done 14,000 in 3.5 years.
  • Jaguar had a prominent guide failure where the component would crack around the 80k mark writing off the engine.

Personally - sale of goods act gives you six years protection - if the car has full main dealer service history, I would be having a word with Peugeot.
  • Might be helpful if OP revealed a bit more pertinent information such as the engine size and fuel type, service history, etc.

    Six years protection under SoGA?

    Don't you mean 6months?

No, don't YOU mean 6 years (although it's the Limitations Act that sets how long after purchase a complaint can be made)?

SOGA doesn't give an explicit six months of absolute full no-questions-asked protection, if that's what you're suggesting.

Having a bit of a google on this, the Prince engine family (BMW-PSA joint design, also used in Minis and smaller BMWs - and all petrol 308s, and a CC is almost certain to be petrol) has a known weakness with the cam chain tensioner, exacerbated by poor oil supply, usually because of inadequate basic maintenance. Tensioner failure causes the chain to run loose, which makes a hell of a noise as it destroys the guides, causing the chain to jump teeth - so the actual internal damage is a result of failing to heed the warning sounds.

There have been class action lawsuits against Mini in the US for at least the last three years. None of them appear to have gone anywhere.

I think you're going to have a hell of a job proving any kind of liability, and would need to commission a full specialist report on the stripped down engine in order to have any kind of chance.

Peugeot warranty is 3 years, if they wont help you there is not a lot you can do. I've suffered timing chain breaking on a Mazda 6 2.2d I had which was 5 years old, I got a used engine fitted and sold car. £6k is high as this is the dealer cost. You will get it done for half the price if you hunt around.

The car has full service history.

Exactly what servicing has it had done?

How many services in the 5 years / 25K miles?

Peugeot say every 12500 miles or 2 years.

Peugeot will look very carefully at both mileage and dates.

Many folks do not understand that it's whichever comes first.

Peugeot are very unlikely to accept any claim if the services are even a tiny bit past their schedule.

    Haven't read the link.

Can you give me a list of cases were the SoGA has been successfully used up to 6 yrs with a used car please, thanks.

    Mileage is suspiciously low!
It's 5 years old, you have had it for 3.

My 5 year old Focus has just been for its MOT and the mileage on it is 10,700 so it's entirely possible that the mileage on the OP's car is genuine.
