If she attended school here I'm fairly certain she'd be able to converse in English.

    ^^^This^^^

OP - you sound genuine, but quite naive here, I'd be 80/20 that she is here illegally, and if she is legally here there must be more to the story than she's telling you... several years over here, including schooling while barely speaking English is pretty implausible, what language do you communicate in that she has told you what she has so far?
  • Older, definitely. But controlling? You might suspect it, but then you might get hold of the wrong end of the stick if you tried to pick this relationship up by the controlling end ???

He could be the one being manipulated.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

I'm sorry, and I may be the only one that thinks it, but this whole scenario 'smells off'....

Not to me. To me I think there are 2 possibilities:

    1. Is that there is a relationship between OP and this girl and he's trying to work out how to get some benefit income for her (despite them being a couple).

    OR

    2. OP is a bit naïve and distinctly lonely and is being kind to a total stranger in order to have some company for himself - but totally overlooking the variety of problems he could end up in as a result of being kind. That "company" could come at a heavy price to him.

I'm currently feeling a bit undecided as to just which of those two scenarios it is.

Beyond that - I have to say that it does look like a high possibility that she is an "illegal" - and I can say that because I've been there/done that possibly (in that a foreign lodger I took in years back came into my house saying he was a student - but I came to have very distinct suspicions he had lied to me - and that was one of the reasons I gave him his notice).

Motto - its easy to believe half-way credible tales one is told by an illegal. They are hardly likely to admit they are an illegal - and you just have to work it out by "joining the dots" and daylight dawns after a while.

OP, if you are excusing paying for everything by "employing" her to housekeep for you, you could be in even more trouble. If she doesn't have immigration status you could be fined up to £20,000 details here

At some point, that child will be going to school - unless they are registered as being able to stay in the UK, I see big trouble ahead for all of you.

Does she have a health visitor for the baby?

Are you not also leading yourself open to allegations of human trafficking?

She is young and there is a baby in nappies. She should at least be having a health visitor attend your house, in my opinion.

And with a baby, the baby at least needs to be registered with a GP. Babies can get very ill very quickly sometimes, and if mum is 19 and living with a 37 year old, it does sound that there may not be too much support for her, and she therefore could be inexperienced.

ETA I am struggling with this thread too, it sounds far fetched to me.

    Two things:

(1)you say you think she came into this country with her family "as a child" - yet she speaks very little or no english?

    (2) her child will not be able to claim british citizenship because s/he was born in the UK.

You and your cousin are either looking at this girl and her baby through rose-coloured glasses - or your cousin is setting up a girl-trafficing operation - or you are stringing us a long ball of woolly lies!

Now this thread has been very careful not to sound in any way objectionable to a potential illegal entrant. Just goes to show how tolerant British people are.

But I noticed the girl is Roma origin. Is she really now?

Get a grip here. Anyone with half a brain would see that the situation OP is putting themselves in is fraught with problems to say the least.

The OP is not naive or easily led. Otherwise he would not have sought advice. QED. There is something not quite right here IMV!

The fact is, there are many objectionable elements to this story, and the potential pitfalls that you refer to are glaring, but are also mentioned here.

Posters have been highlighting other additional elements that may not have been taken into consideration, but all have been covered.

I don't know if this charity is in existence still, but they may be a source of support for the young lady:
