Cold windy and very wet South Wales here too up in the valleys :D

Getting ready for winter in August  summer certainly passed us by, the heating is on and blinds and door curtains are being put in place. I've been scouring the web for winter warming tips and the best ones seem to be here.

    1) Buy a big fluffy blanket to snuggle up with on the sofa
    2) Buy slippers. And fluffy socks.
    3) Sort wardrobe and get rid of the jumpers two sizes too small and charity shop them. While I'm there, buy something more my size.
    4) Make curtains for the small windows in the kitchen and bathroom. We've roller blinds currently and I want a bit of extra insulation.
[STRIKE] 5) Make draught excluders for a couple of the windows. There's a small gap between the bottom of the curtains and the top of the windowsill that is just begging for a draught excluder. I've old pillows at the ready![/STRIKE]
    6) Stock up on dried and tinned food, and keep up with the meal planning I'm doing to save money for the fuel bills!
    7) Use my slow cooker more often and find more recipes to do in it.

There, the first crossed off the list. Although, thinking about it, some of them will never get crossed off as they are ongoing ones. :)

its a fabric 'bag', about 8"x5" or however big you want to make it. you leave one end open, fill it 3/4 full with dried rice, or wheat, or dried peas (i think), sew up the end

you then put it in the m/wave next to a cup of water (to keep rice moist) and zap it for maybe 2mins

its a bit like a hot water bottle, and will keep you toasty warm :D then when it goes cold, you just keep sticking it back in the m/wave with a mug of water and reheat it....dead easy ;)

wow thanks, i bought some tapioca for 5p a packet in Asda wonder if i can use that

Got the girls a fleece each in Ikea yesterday, baby blue and think they were £1.47 each, got two white throws for the sofas as well, sort of knitted/woven and very soft, they were lovely last night!

Think I might put up thermal blinds in the girls rooms rather than line their curtains, well I won't be putting them up else they'll have to stay up or down only, we wouldn't be able to touch them! Will see how much it'll cost. Need to speak to ds and find out what's acceptable to him for his windows! His room is very toasty though as the hot water pipes all run under his floor, bit unbearable in summer actually, well it would be if it was hot!

Great idea about putting light weight duvets under the sheet, will be doing that definitely, being a bit odd I like to get into a cold bed, like a hot water bottle for my toes though, but don't want it to stay cold once i get in it!

Years ago I bought (from a charity shop) a double bedspread, quite old fashioned but with fringing round the edges. Anyway over one winter I sewed on top of it, patchwork, but in Victorian Crazy style which is very haphazard. Its a mix of satin, velevet, cottons with little buttons and applique and the odd bit of silvery ribbon etc, just made out of odds and sods really.

It is the warmest thing in the world. Funnily enough a friend of mine said that I could sell it and get about £30 for it!!!!!!! Bearing in mind it took me about four months to complete, not exactly a good return. No - it shall be an heir loom, I have decided! My DS has been informed of the fact. I may even insist on it in my will ;) (only joking).

Seriously though if you have old clothes etc, just cut them up. I found some hideous velvet blouses etc at jumble sales. It really is lovely when its all sewn up and as I say so warm and snuggly. When my DS surfaces, I will try to get him to picture a smaller one I made and post it.
