Preparing for Winter

Hi everyone. We are actually having some dry sunny weather here since Sunday, and it is great to be able to dry the washing outside:) We are only putting on the heating for an hour or two at night if needed if not it is off(gas) and are very careful when putting on the water heater as well. I sit in my jammies
after my bath at night and put the fleecey blanket over my knees and knit so am snug as well. My dh has to go to bed very early at nights as he is up at 4.00 am for work I have just received an order from a company called linens limited which I heard about from another person on here, and placed an order with them. I am delighted with it. I got two db flannelette sheets and two pink fleece blankets, which have a lovely motif on them, and two face cloths one bath mat, and finally a Man United fleece for the top of my son's bed as he supports them:) I was also in Woolworths yesterday and saw some bargains, but just got a really pretty warm pink child's scarf with a butterfly on it with little buttons on the wings, and was originally £4 down to £2 and when I took it to the till it was only £1 so it will go into a shoebox I am making up for the children's appeal. I have only to buy a letterbox draught excluder now and will get one when I am in town on Thursday.
Do a little kindness every day.;)0 -
We have been going to bed just after the children recently and watching tv in bed to keep warm and prevent turning the heating on. People keep phoning (phone downstairs - must get one for upstairs too) and wondering why they dont get a reply - why are we in bed it only 8pm!Me, DD1 19, DS 17, DD2 14, Debt Free 04/18, Single Mum since 11/19

hiya i cant belive how chillie it is already im so skint at the min but was looking for some ideas to keep the house warm either for free or as cheap as poss as i had plans to insulate and buy fleeces and stuff but since i had to pay for the car to be fixed things are so tight ... please help !!
There are lots of good ideas on here, & there's another thread too called something like "Avoid using Gas & Electric"....
One thing you can do now, is start collecting the bubble-wrap that you see in the boxes of fruit in supermarkets...ask first tho, cuz they may have some out the back that you can snaffleThen you can start making draught excluders like MrsMc, or lining your windows; tape it onto the back of your curtains etc etc

I love this thread:T I haven't had the heating on yet either. its cold today and I have a fleece on, socks etc. On an evening I light a few candles, someone told me that you get as much warmth as 1kw fire..not sure? but it certainly helps keep the chill out. I had 10 tea lights going and a couple of long lasting church candles..I love the ambience too, all snug with a fleece throw over me. Anyone know if Asda have the boot slippers in yet like last year? I was too late getting my size last year and they looked so comfy and warm.0

Hi all
As I type I am hearing the buzz of an electric saw out in the garden, we gave my daugther's friend a tenner and asked him to saw as much wood as he felt ok with that amount of money, and he started yesterday and almost not stopped (apart for the night!). He loves chopping wood and using the electric saw - I asked him whether he wants more money but he said no, he enjoys doing the sawing!
The wood shed is all nicely stacked and nearly full and now we definitely have enough wood to see us through October (meaning we should be ok to avoid putting the heating on until 1st November!).
Meanwhile I am off to have a look for fluffy mini-duvets in my local Lidl!
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Does anyone else find it nice and comfy and cosey snuggling up to a pillow - ok granted i have my OH but he moves, wriggles, snores etc and i was thinkign if i get one of these

I could snuggle up to it and it would help retain body heat, but then bf might think im trying to ban him form my side of the bed:rolleyes:. Also my lidls has those bootie slippers in so think i may be off over there on a trip tomorrow to grab a pair. They look well cosyTime to find me again0 -
if you mean the body pillows i had one when i was pregnant last year - they are wonderful but my husband has banned it from the bed. Thinks i am replacing him. Not sure if they keep me warm as it was through the summer i mainly used it. Might sneek it into bed and give it a go if i get coldMe, DD1 19, DS 17, DD2 14, Debt Free 04/18, Single Mum since 11/19

Well I don't know what is happening here -but im sure we are in winter  ..
As much as it pains me I think we are going to start having to set our heating to start coming on for an hour before hubby gets up for work. I was up earlier than usual this morning and GOD was it nippy  . Hubby spends a lot of his time working outside -so I really don't want to be sending him out to work cold..
It will only go on for that hour before he gets up and that will be it for now ..
He has tootled off to work with a flask of thick HM soup and plenty of HM bread - he has some at mid morn break, some for lunch and then finishes it off at his afternoon break -he reckons it keeps him warmer that way -plus he doesn't feel stodged after lunch from eating the whole flask
Luckily our gas/electric comes straight out of hubbies wages every month with the rent... they came to read the meters yesterday -the first time in over a year  so lets keep our fingers crossed that we are due a refundor at least that we don't owe any
Im just finishing of working out our meal plans for now until xmas -a lot of things will turn up every week -our faves like corned beef hash n dumplings etc -so Im then going to work out how many tins of corned beef, how many boxes of suet etc i will need -Im then going to get them in and on the shelves with the other store stuff...
right back to the meal plan
This is exactly what I have been doing Mrs M;) My DH thinks I'm bonkers having 14 tins of cornbeef in my pantry:D

I had to laugh Sexymouse, your user name and the thought of you sitting at your PC with mini duvets on your feet !, my DH laughs at me and my socks and stuff to keep warm. No offence meant at all, just SexyMouse with Duvet Feet tickled me.:D
I had to have a look on the Lidl website at these and fell in love with them - our local Lidl is normally rubbish for things like this but asked DH to have a look on his way home.....he came back with a pair for me and a pair each for DDs - they're just fab!!!!! :T
I'm currently sitting here in my fluffy all in one fleecy suit with my mini duvets on my feet feeling toasty warm (what I look like is a completely different matter).
I think everyone should have some :j"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0
