I have just rung my supplier to order some solid fuel.
He warned me that costs have just escalated and that wef next week the price for each bag will increase by 30%.
Apparantly China is buying in such quantities that it is pushing up the price.
If anyone is thinking about buying in a stock, NOW might be the time to do it.Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0 -
Regarding lining curtains.
I know that some have said they are going to use old sheets/quilt covers etc but if you don't have any then there are some quite long curtains (168 x 183cm) for sale at www.halfcost.co.uk for £1.99.
Ok, you have to pay delivery costs but you will find a code in the vouchers forum to bring the postage down from £3.99 to about £1.49.
http://www.halfcost.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=11&productId=25218&langId=-1&cache_entry=-1#
By the way, they also have fleecy girls dressing gowns for £1.49 (2-3 yr olds).
I bought one for our 9 year old and they are lovely and soft and quite long.0 -
Evening everyone
Well I have picked up a few more bits n bobs for the "winter store" in the basement today ...- 3 cartons of veggies... thought I would keep them for super emergancies-But I want to try 1 to see if its worth getting more
1 peas n sweetcorn in light cheese sauce, 1 peas n carrots in hollandaise and 1 lentils n veggies in a light cream sauce..not too bad for 49c each -about 37p.... and enough for the 2 of us -but as I say only in emergancies
- 2 more bags of dried peas
- 3 huge tins of fruit in juice -
- The nets of onions etc are starting to appear :T so i picked up a 5 kilo one for about £1.20 -I use loads :Dso will see how well they last so I know when to get them for winter
I have plenty of blankies etc and have double checked how much bedding and how many towels we have -just in case getting stuff dry is a problem-(although the laundry is done in the basement so at least its not going to make the house damp :T ) thankfully we have loads -so even if we use a towel each a day we can go a fortnight without running out
right -off to sort out my list...keep up the great work everyone-it will be worth it when we are tucked up nice n snug in the depths of winter-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 - 3 cartons of veggies... thought I would keep them for super emergancies-But I want to try 1 to see if its worth getting more

Those Asda fleece blankets are pretty thin but surprisingly warm. My laptop is by the window and last night I was feeling the cold coming through the windows, so I wrapped the fleece around my shoulders and was lovely and toasty.0

With the prices as things are at the moment and our landlord only having old-fashioned expensive to run night storage heaters in our house we can't afford to put them on yet (trying to hold out for another month at least) but in the mornings the house is freezing.
I have noticed I get a chill coming in from the front door through the hallway and into the lounge, also our lounge has large patio doors which I also think allow a draft in...does anyone have any ideas for making some sort of draft excluder or other tips from the "old days" that could be used nowadays to keep a bit warmer on a budget?
We are wearing extra layers but I am worried my son is still getting cold.
Believe me I have told our landlord about the doors and heating situation but nothing gets resolved.0 -
Hi mumma2one,
There is a current thread with lots of ideas that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.
These threads may help too:
Avoid using GAS and ELECTRIC !
the ice man cometh! (merged with keeping warm)

For those of you who are getting food items in to store, don't forget to get a couple of those 5ltr water bottles to go with them, just in case. Items such as dried peas will (obviously!) need to be soaked, rinsed if planning on sprouting some, and some tinned items can have quite high amounts of salt in them, making you need more water. Powdered milk is no use without water!
I always make sure that I have a couple of bottles in date and on standby now - a few years ago our area had a bug in our water and were told to drink bottled only. There were some bottles being handed out by the water company, but it wasn't much. Within a couple of hours all the shops in town had run out.0
