Thanks Gingervamp, Zarazara and Thistledown for your suggestions....lovely stove, can't find an Irish stockist but will email them and see what comes up...although I was really hoping for one with some kind of boiler, but could ask about that too. Am half afraid to look at anything second hand, although a friend recommended the same thing to-day, but with my luck the bl**dy boiler would burst the day after I bought it! Have decided to think about it and see how kitchen is when finished, there is a radiator there already so we will see how comfy the room is with just that.

  • I have a query, in the event of a power cut, does anyone have any suggestions how i would help my tropical fish survive until the power returns? The only thing i could think of was a generator but they're big, noisy and expensive, unless anyone knows of a smaller 'emergency' alternative?

    Thanks

my ds keeps tropical and cold water fish. Depends how long the cut lasts, if it was days on end then your local fish selling pet shop will have a back up generator but assuming its up to 48 hours or so he does the following:
    • after 12 hours a 10% water change then every 12 hours after till power returns
    • wrap tank in duvet to keep warm
    • if temperature drops below the min add a hot water bottle/floating plastic milk bottle to keep temp up
have found that up to 12 hours is usually OK but test for ammonia and nitrates after and treat if needed

OMG : You have just made me depressed. Is it official that summer is over? I was hanging on to my summer clothes in the (faint) hope that we would get a few late summer days. It seems like I've only just unpacked them.

    Hi

You can get battery operated air pumps but I don't know how powerful they are, you may need two for a large tank.

I have seen them in our fish shop but can't remember how much they were.

Here is one for sale on ebay to give you an idea what I am talking about.

  • I`m hoping for a late summer. Balmy days sitting on the patio, sipping tea and reading the paper. I`ll be packing summer clothes away in october
  • well I managed to get my bathroom curtains made yesterday, took me ages as I'm not a natural seamstress it has to be said.I have tried in the past to follow books and patterns but it's all double dutch to me so I stick to things I can cut & sew in straight lines :o even then I have to take the long way round about it but I get there in the end :D Anyway now my curtains are double the thickness and a lot darker too,our bathroom is next to bedroom and I'm in and out of there a few times a night so I keep doors open just enough to squeeze through without making lots of noise opening and closing them all the time as OH is light sleeper :o

Most of our winter proofing is done now, need to get the other big rug out of the loft to put down in the living room,we've got 2 big rugs but we take one up in the Summer time to make it feel cooler lighter and then bring down again so we can feel cosy again once Winter comes a round.

I was looking at our front door the other day the bottom panels are just thin ply wood!!!! So not very weatherproof or secure I'd say. We've got door curtains up already but need to think about lining those panels some how to stop the wind whistling through and make them more security proof,as they are now a burgular could kick through them really easily

Well, it's stopped raining here (was dry yesterday too) but I've just heard on the news that there are likely to be more floods in the west of the UK later this week. It's bloomin' cold today here.
