Yes I know. I stated this back in post #201 and you found it hard to believe so I was just providing further evidence.

Thanks for finally agreeing that I was correct.

    Woosh!

(I never said that you were incorrect - just that it didn't sound right. Given the weasel wording use by the government confusion reigns, with many thinking they are mandating all proceeds be given to charity.)

...it's called selective memory. He is a legend!

It's nothing to do with selective memory.

Nick clearly has a very large bee in his bonnet about this subject and I was just gently ribbing him by pointing out the the VAT charge he himself clarified means that shops wouldn't really be expected to hand over the whole 5p.

If someone shows that I'm wrong about something I take the correction on board and may well use the corrected information later - it doesn't mean I'v forgotten anything.

    It's called: Learning. ;)

    3) Place your bag in the baggage area.

Thats the option I see on self service checkouts

If people have the inability to follow simple instructions then that is their problem and maybe they shouldn't be allowed out on their own

Sometimes when the self scan asks "do you have your own bag?" I've said yes. Then it tells me to put it on the ledge, which it then proceeds not to like as "my own bag" is a canvas shopper with things already in it, so I get "please wait, an assistant is coming". At this point I abandon the exercise and go to another till!

If they want you to use your own bag they should fix it that bags of all types are recognised.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • Whatever you do come 5th October, don't take your whinging out on the sales assistants and checkout operators in store. They are just doing their job following company rules and law.

If you have a problem take it up with your government.

The way people are talking here you would think that it is a totally new and alien concept not that the rest of the UK has been doing for years. Is it only the English that are struggling? Will England come to a grinding halt on Monday while the rest of the UK curl up laughing at the inability of the English to cope with a simple concept?

Obviously all these 'what if' scenarios are being thought up by people who have not experienced the system and are trying to find a reason why it cannot work.

DON'T PANIC. The system works. The country won't come to a grinding halt. In a week's time you will be wondering what all the fuss was about.

    "I've said yes"

Could your problems be because you are talking to the machine? ;)

Do you also say "thank you" when it gives you your change? :D

Sorry I was typing on a train and a couple of minutes from the Liverpool underground system with loss of signal, so didn't put it very well.

To clarify - machine displays a message "Do you have your own bag?"; I tap "Yes"; machine displays "Please place your bag on the ***" (can't remember what it is called, the place where you put your shopping after you have scanned it); I oblige, machine displays "Please wait, an assistant is coming".

Obviously the "own bag" that they expect you to be using is an empty plastic one, weighing a few grams. Anything over that confuses them, presumably because it perceives that unscanned items have been placed there.

This really annoys me actually, as I often have room in my main shopping bag for the couple of items I'm buying, but I'm forced to balance my bag somewhere, or put it on the floor, as the post-scanning side doesn't recognise it.

But what will it all matter in 100 years, as my mum used to say :rotfl: .

We have had this charge for years now in Wales and they haven't changed the self service tills to recognise bags heavier than a carrier bag in the bagging area.

I prefer to self scan with the wand rather than scan at till so I don't get this problem.

Supermarket shopping is easy without free carrier bags as your own bags are sturdier and easier to pack.

It will be clothes shopping that make you miss the free carrier though even now some shops still automatically give you a bag and don't charge you.

When you go to McDonalds they will charge you 5p for a bag for take out if you say yes. Always say no as they can put chips in a bag for free (unpacked loose food can go in free bag so things like fruit and veg at market you still get free carrier bag) and then you can put the rest of your food in!

My colleague wants to know for those that live in Scotland, Wales and NI, do you feel like a 'criminal' when you pay for a bag?
Do people tut or murmur at you for doing this?
Do people tut or say things like ' Why do you need a new bag for one item?' when item is like a box of tissues and have another bag which can fit tissues?
