4Nigel: If I ask for a plastic bag to take my bags away in will you need to charge me 5p?

No because 4Nigel is less than 250 employees...least I hope so!
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

I think there is a real business opportunity here. Once you hit 250 employees Nigel, you can franchise it!

One thing I have read and I could have misread is if you buy a razor you get a free carrier bag. There is nothing really embarrassing about carrying a razor blade / blades out of a shop. On the other hand do you get a free carrier bag if you purchase feminine sanitary products in Boots etc. Or are us women expected to just jaunt out of Boots with a large box of Tampax - not that this would embarrass me! :)

Once again I'll quote from the guidance:
    Bags you don’t charge for

You don’t charge for plastic bags that are:

    - for unwrapped blades, including axes, knives, and knife and razor blades
I am not sure that exemption has anything to do with embarrassment, are you?

If anyone is concerned about embarrassment, can I suggest they either take a bag with them when going shopping, or buy one from the retailer at whatever price they are being sold at.

I [snip] will collect extra bags in the produce aisle to overwrap freezer and fridge items and meat as I don't want my bags ruined.

    Be careful of that!
We got told off (nastily) in M&S for doing that (& this is before the charge has started nationwide, although M&S already charge 5p for their standard-size carrier bags at the till).
You're OK taking last week's produce bags with you to put this week's meat in, but don't take new bags from the produce aisles for meat the same day - those bags are only free for loose produce.

But this thread is about charging for bags in England.

The Government guidance for this has been posted many times on this thread and it clearly states:

Thus there is no compulsory charge for paper bags in England.

As I have made clear in previous posts I live in Wales and that we were charged for paper bags here Poosticks asked me for a link so I gave him one!

This thread is amusing me as there was a similar outcry of "I can't cope without free bags" in Wales in 2011 but now it's no biggie. We laugh when assistant asks if we want a bag and we say no "I'm too mean to pay 5p".

In Sainsburys tonight 2 male students were OUTRAGED that they had to pay 5p for a bag, that they are free in England etc. When the till operator pointed out it wasn't for much longer they still weren't impressed. Guess they could afford it though as the 2 of them were getting a taxi back with their 2 bags of shopping. I heard where they said they were going to and it was max 2 mile walk. Guess they are feeling rich with their student loan just in!

My colleague wants to know for those that live in Scotland, Wales and NI, do you feel like a 'criminal' when you pay for a bag?
Do people tut or murmur at you for doing this?
Do people tut or say things like ' Why do you need a new bag for one item?' when item is like a box of tissues and have another bag which can fit tissues?

    no, no and no.

Thank you, as I said 'I could have misread' clearly I did. Secondly, I always take a bag shopping especially when going to the supermarket! I don't habitably carry one when popping into Boots, but I will in the future!

If they told me off or tried to charge me for protecting my paid for bags (from home) from leaks of fresh meat juices etc. I would tell them where they could shove there shopping!

NI here no. We think !!!!!! I have to buy a bag, when I have a dozen of them at home.:rotfl: In my case I always have one stuffed in my handbag, but then if I food shop and then buy a clothing item end up buying a bag for that. For some reason I do not like to mix in the same bag. Our self service tills, I just keep the bag in the trolley hit yes own bag. Then pack items into bag sitting in the trolley after I have paid.
