i know £2000 sounds really bad, but when we worked it all out he had miscalculated by pence ,about 9 times out of a possible 52 weeks a year.over the six years.
some of the charges were got when we actually did have savings,we could have taken money out of their ,if we had thought we needed too,so yeh, i have managed to avoid charges by leaving £5 in although it wasn't exactly like that,he has had alot, because he didn't leave himself that, and obviously thought he had calculated everything, when he bought a packet of fags, or drew out £10 two days before pay day.

all i'm saying is it could have been a whole lot worse, if we really didn't care about money, but he did his best to his knowledge at the time.
what more can i say to that really, accept, how can i take the cards away from a grown man ,who earns the money for the family, and treat him like an irrisponsible child? when ,by the amount he has gone over by doesn't reflect that at all, just a man who can't remember the exact pounds and pence of everything he has bought and paid for.nor can i for that matter, but i have scraped by,sometimes only by a few pence, so even though i have no charges i do know how difficult it can be keeping within the zero, without being able to see everything, and trying to remember how much things were.
  • When I lived in Germany, attempting to have an un-authorised overdraft was highly frowned upon and would result in being called into the managers office with a warning that doing it again would result in account closure and proceedings could be started for fraudulent activity. The amount you were overdrawn by had no bearing, what you had done was important. I would say you have got off lightly, as the German banks usually spoke to each other about why accounts were closed which could make it difficult to open a new one.
  • I've just read throught this whole thread and a few things said have struck a chord with me. I have had the experience of going into one shop, buying some bits and pieces and using my debit card to pay for them without a problem. I then went to another shop, went to pay for some more items (for a lower amount) and had my debit card refused  Very embarrasing. This, by the way was my own fault, I get paid in cash and had paid my wages into the wrong account.. I was in a rush and just gave the cashier my card without looking at it at the time.. Anyway, when I went home and checked my online banking the first transaction was not shown, and my balance was still showing the funds I had left in there before I went to the shops in the first place. The point being if the bank knew my balance was low enough to refuse payment on the second transaction I tried to make then why the hell can't they show it to me? It seems that internally they know your balance instantly, yet cannot show you it until 2-3 days afterwards. I'm just glad that the payment didn't go through and I didn't get charged.

when it has happened to me,my available balance has moved ,but not my balance, and it does not show where you spent that money.

the reason why it will not show where you spent it is because, the system can tell you have made a payment and for how much, but what is not instant is knowing where the request for the funds came from,so the bank still have to wait for the credit note , from the shop, so they know who to pay. weather they have earmarked it through the system or not.

(earmarked = deducted from available balance)
