Which, of course, is how parties frequently lose elections. Their supporters stay at home.
Personally, I think voting (especially in General Elections or By-Elections) should be compulsory - just add "None of the above" to the list of candidates so that people can indicate their choice not to vote.0 -

I'm more than happy to agree that it should be compulsory for you to vote. Please leave me out of it.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -

I could see it being beneficial for society as a whole, as long as a spoiled vote or "none of the above" can apply. Given that, I think it's a good thing overall, even if some people would find it offensive. Since I vote anyway, it's hard for me to understand why someone would find this a problem. But I just did a quick google and it seems like it's quite an emotive issue, so maybe best left to another thread.0 -
Surely this car crash will be over by Christmas. Even the Tories see the negative effects of a weak and chaotic opposition.
Mind you - the unions might go for Diane Abbott next time!0 -

It would be the point at which I'd stop voting.it seems like it's quite an emotive issue, so maybe best left to another thread.
Yes, some people like imposing their will on others, and these others are often less than impressed. But agreed.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

would voting in the referendum be compulsory?0 -

That would seem to be rather a pointless exercise.
It's already quite straightforward for people to indicate "their choice not to vote" by simply not voting.0 -

Over by Christmas? Which Christmas? I'm not even convinced it will be over by Christmas 2020.:)...Mind you - the unions might go for Diane Abbott next time!
No, this is a one time deal.
If Corbyn was to be run-over by a HGV tomorrow and Labour was obliged to elect a new leader, neither Abbott, nor McDonnell, nor any similar leftie would even make it onto the ballot paper. The PLP is not going to make the same mistake again.
The Cobytrons need time to take control of the party machine, and time to change the composition of the PLP. Thus they will persist, irrespective of minor little issues such as losing elections.:)0
