  • Hi Benben, great to see you posting again. I used to love reading your diaries, you are so organised with your list making. I like making lists, it's the doing the damn things on it that's the hard bit! I stopped doing survey years ago as I seemed to always be doing them and getting screened out so I gave up. Seeing your voucher totals has made me reconsider though. Well done!

I also work in a school (SLT PA/Cover Manager) and went to my first prom this year. We had the usual buffet/disco/photo booth/photographer. How about having a red carpet or fireworks? Might make it a bit more memorable?
Cos I don't shine if you don't shine.
  • I believe he is the same one yes Verbatim :) Maybe she'll pop in here some day, would be lovely :D

In my new job I get to organise the prom for year 11, can I ask any of you who have kids that have been to a prom, or if you have been yourself (they didn't do them when I was at school :o ), or if you just want to chip in with your own thoughts, what makes a prom good? I went to our one this year at school and it felt very functional - a buffet, a disco, but all in a bog standard function room that had a few 'decorations' chucked at it, and a photo-booth in the corner. The photo-booth was the highlight for most of them, I'd just like the evening to be a bit more 'Wow' and memorable for them, and for those poor parents who have shelled out stupid amounts of money on getting their dd's and ds's ready for it :)

My dd2 had her prom in July and eldest's was 2 years ago. Their school had the evening prom part somewhere out of school. This year's was at Centerparcs, cost was £25 for the ticket I think:eek:
During the day they turn up at school all dressed up, have an assembly with leavers awards, give out the yearbooks etc. A wander round school afterwards for photos and parents all turn up at 2ish to see them all then they leave in their various fancy modes of transport for meals. The evening prom is at 7ish.

They had a photo booth too which went down well:p Also the Y7 photos on the screens during assembly was entertaining apparently. Lots of photo opportunities goes down well with 16 year olds!;)
I really need to sort out a new signature!
  • I made the brownie cake today....what an absolute disaster:p I'm not bad at baking and have never had such a mess...it just grew out of the tin like lava in the oven and went everywhere, just a runny mess! So have had an unexpected oven clean today:D I definitely followed the recipe too...very odd!

I decided in the end on the apple cake, purely for financial reasons - I need to make two (Mr S and ds want one for home) and that was the cheapest ;)

So today, the scales aren't looking good, 2lbs on since last week, purely because I havent been at the gym much and I haven't been carefu about my eating. So today that stops ;)

I'm about to take the dog for a walk down the beach to get some steps in, tesco food delivery is coming after lunch, cakes need making, ironing needs doing, and I will either do my kettlebell dvd or go to the gym today.

Well the dog only got to go round the block but he will go on a proper long walk later. I have been to the gym instead, I did a 2k run, 20 mins on the cross-trainer and 20 mins (6 miles) on the bike. The machine is telling me I burned 469 calories which has made me feel a bit better today :D

Molly I like the fireworks idea although not sure about the cost / H&S side of it? I'm thinking maybe a candyfloss machine / candy bar etc, something else alongside the photobooth as thats what they all love :)

My DS had his prom a couple of years ago - we paid £25 (I think) and they went along to a gorgeous converted barn (usually for weddings) - they had a 3 course meal, followed by a DJ set and disco. There was no photo booth but one of the pupils did the photography.

They also had an awards ceremony which everyone enjoyed.

The decorations were amazing - the venue had decorated it like they would for a wedding so very elegant.

The pupils sorted out their own transport - my son went on a vintage bus with about 20 others.

Don't forget that most kids will go to the after-prom party (not organised by the school) so you might need to find out what time that is starting as you don't want to have for instance fireworks at 11pm if all the pupils are going to after-prom at 10.45pm.
  • Oh yes, I forgot about the after party! Maybe you could search on Pinterest for ideas?

I will be checking a few venues, I have one or two in mind, last years place was okay, not great but okay. We used to do awards but they got stopped a couple of years back due to something I don't really know much about. This years was a buffet whereas in the past its been a proper meal, although because its not-much-per-head they don't tend to be top quality meals, this years was (students choice) pizza, nuggets and chips with brownies and chocolate eclairs on the buffet, they wolfed the lot :D:D Hmm, will keep thinking ....

We have been out with the dog, the cakes have been made and are almost done, the roast is doing its thing. The ironing still needs doing, my kettlebell dvd is still nagging at me, I may do the bad section later. The food shopping arrived, no substitutes :) I have bought a new remote for the garage door as ours is getting really tempramental - (£21 on amazon, used vouchers).

  • How about a prom 'festival / fair ' in a field
Ideas that spring to mind are live bands (maybe some school wannabee oasis type bands :D)
    and a tribute band.
Bacon rolls, hot dogs, candy floss machines, tarot reading, fireworks, the thing that you smash to make the bell ring!

    There's only one problem - the weather!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Another day at the office done :) Tonight I'm having a fairly chilled night, a bit of housework to stay on top of everything, a walk with the dog, a bit of mooching on here, probably few bits of schoolwork too.

Today has been a nsd :T Dinner will probably be breaded fish and oven chips I reckon.

Not sure if I mentioned it, ds window is being fixed on saturday (£155) and I also got a quote while they were here for the rest of my windows as they have all done that thing where they get all foggy etc. Anyway, I've decided to go ahead with some, I am having the lounge door ones done; basically my property is really weird but I have a door that opens out onto a juliette balcony, which in effect means the door opens but the railings are right there so you cant step outside? :o (Not explaining this well am I :p ), anyway, it consists of a door with two glass panels and another door-size double window next to it. I am having the glass in those replaced with energy efficient toughened glass (£375). Quite a bit of money but worth it I reckon as I'm starting to get little black mould patches in the corner of them and that will only get worse as the winter goes on.

I also have 5 large velux windows but they will need to wait for now as it will probably be best to replace the whole units with upvc frame ones (mine are older wooden frames).
