Accused of shoplifting, fobbed off.

Went to my local tesco express and bought 2 bottles of beer at self scan. Paid for them put them in my bag and went to leave.

The assistant behind the counter said "exscuse me,did you pay for both bottles".

I replied "yes" to which he then said "I don't think you did, can I see your receipt".

I showed him and he said ok,and that was that.

After leaving the store the more I thought about it the worse I felt.

Yesterday I went in to complain and see the manager, but he wasn't there and I saw the deputy.

Again I felt quite let down. He said to me he would have a word with the assistant involved.

Am I right to feel aggrieved and fobbed off.

    Sounds very reasonable to me.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

I'm sorry would have been appropriate. Not about compo, think the assistant got off lightly as he broke the law. You cant just accuse for shoplifting, you need to see the theft taking place.

I was thinking a case of wine would be a good sweetener, or am I under estimating my pain.

If he saw you use the self scan and did not see you put both through then he had reasonable grounds to verify whether you had in fact scanned them both. Though his belief was wrong, it was reasonable - what law do you suggest he had broken?

    He didn't break the law.

I can, as a customer, ask another customer if they've paid for an item if I so wish. I wouldn't be breaking any laws either.
