Wow just read a few of the posts. I started reading because I thought gosh they must have a lot of clothes but to be honest I think I need to go home an get organised. I have two double wardrobes with a shelving unit on each side. Chest / storage boxes on top with a chest of drawers. All coats are kept elsewhere. Think I need to go sort out!Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0

I don't own any Armani underwear. My expensive lingerie is by an Italian brand called Cotton Club - like these: http://www.nancymeyer.com/Cotton-Club-Pane-E-Tulipani-Cyclamen-Hi-Cut-Brief/PAAAAACHOPBCKMLM/product?color=OAT
I have 8 sets of their lingerie - the rest is good old M&S
I do actually own a pair of the shoes I linked ..... along with about 120-150 other pairs. I don't know how many pairs I have in total because I've never actually counted them. It's entirely possible that I've worn those shoes at the same time I've been wearing my good underwear, just as I've worn M&S undies with Jimmy Choos, Bally, Russell & Bromley shoes. I match my shoes to my outfit - not my underwear.0 -

Oh so you do understand that it is perfectly possible to buy decent quality items at a fair value and someone who wants double cuffed shirts doesnt have to spend their monthly paycheck to get an overrated italian fashion house branded item.
You see your above statement just sounds a little hypocritical to me now. First you shoot me down for buying "department store" stuff, then you admit you do it yourself.
Then you call me pompous, and then you try and tell us all how you own several hundred pointless but high priced brand named items.
By the way, Jimmy Choos and most other brands are overrated. Other than the brand label, it is quite difficult to justify their price IMO. Personally I buy value clothing/footwear, and spend the extra money that I save on a quality timepeice every now and again. So far my collection has appreciated in value, and I know I can resell most of them at market value or pass them on to my children.0 -

Or so they say. Rolex and Heuers are really hot right now. I'm kind of kicking myself for offloading a birthyear rolex submariner, for £6K at the end of last year - i more than doubled what I bought it for. But I do now miss the watch a fair bit and might start hunting for another.0 -

I said I bought M&S underwear, I didn't say anything about buying clothes from Debenhams, Next, New Look .......
I do buy items like sweatshirts from Gap, White Stuff etc
Yes it is pretty pompous to make the statement you did in your first post on this thread : "I'm not boasting here, but I have a very limited wardrobe compared to you. Yet I find that I am usually the best dressed person at most venues (both work and social)."
How would you know if premium branded footwear is overrated if you don't own any? If it is the price point you find unpalatable then try outlet shopping malls. I buy my Jimmy Choos from their shop at Bicester Village - with 70% off they cost the same as many high street brands.
Personally I shop wisely and buy better quality clothing, often probably less than you have paid for high street items - e.g. Nicole Farhi leather jacket with an original retail price of £1,300 bought with 90% off, so £130. See, I am very MSE :T0 -

It might appear pompous to you, as you seem to associate brand labels as being an indicator of something being high quality. I tend to find this is sometimes not the case. It is perfectly feasible to find good quality items that are not branded or endorsed by some fashion designer or celebrity. Considering that my circle of friends usually wear jeans and tshirts at most social gatherings, a pair of chinos and shirts instantly makes me the most dressy person there. Voila.
Pompous? Not even close. You want to see examples of pomposity, see your comments here (the common theme seems to be the brand names you throw around, which you'll find I do very little of):
"I buy my Jimmy Choos from their shop at Bicester Villag"
"just as I've worn M&S undies with Jimmy Choos, Bally, Russell & Bromley shoes."
" I've got knickers that cost more than a TM Lewin shirt "
"Nicole Farhi leather jacket with an original retail price of £1,300"
Now I ask you, why the importance on it being designed by a man named Jimmy or woman named Nicole? Do you have any evidence that they are more comfortable than other lesser priced shoes or longer lasting? Nope. You see the RRP and assume they must be great.
The way I shop, I have no need to buy an item of clothing with a badge on there claiming to be Hugo Boss or Armarni or Jimmy Choos. I can pick out a goodyear welted leather shoes and know they look better and last longer than the expensive nike that some bloke opposite me is wearing.
Bottom line, in some cases, yes designer brands use higher quality fabrics and have great return policies and customer service. But at their prices, I dont think they add that much value compared to a lesser branded item made equally well with good materials.
In answer to your question: "How would you know if premium branded footwear is overrated if you don't own any?" - been there done that. £120 for a designer shirt. Once and that was my first and last time. I am quite happy with my £30 TM Lewin shirt, thank you. It looks just as good, feels just as good and saves me money. Boohoo, it doesn't say AX on the collar tag. See what I mean about quality/value, which I have repeated several times now? The extra spent on the designer brand just doesnt justify it. Perhaps at £50 I would think about it, but when its costing me twice what a decent shirt costs. I know which I will pick.
I'll give it to you that finding high quality garments at discount prices are very MSE. Well done. But there are 2 points that stick in my mind:
1) my reaction to "Nicole Farhi leather jacket with an original retail price of £1,300" is along the lines of "meh, who comes up with the rrp on these things?" Cutting a leather jacket and stitching it can cost a few hundred at most in labour/material costs. The other £1000 is the brand label. Also I have never heard of this brand. So you can see on how much importance I place on the name.
2) you say you have 150~200 or more pairs of shoes. No matter how MSE you are, even at £20 each (and I'm not even accounting for your jimmy choos here) thats a serious dent in any money savers budget.
With that in mind, like I've said before, I look for value/comfort - which for me at least don't tie in to brand label items. I don't go hunting for 50% off designer branded jumper, I hunt for merino wool jumper. It usually turns out to be warm, comfortable, within my budget alas it doesnt have the ralph lauren logo on it. But it does me just fine.
"Pompous" you say? "Hypocrite" I respond.0 -
I've not read any of the replies.
All the clothes that i own can fit into 2 drawers and 4 coat hangers. I try and live a minimalist life, so dont buy anything that i dont NEED. I am the same with bags, shoes, jewellery etc.
However, i am now in NEED of a few new trousers, so am going shopping tomorrow for new stuff.
As a woman, i dont see the attraction in buying loads of new things..i think it skipped my genes and my sister got double the dose as she has loads and loads of clothes, bags, shoes, make up etc!0 -
Like 99% of the population. I'm happy to buy 99% of my knickers at M&S!!!!0
