:D You carry on GG...sure Alex will be very happy to impart his car knowledge... could end up with an MSE DIY car service manual :rotfl:

My Grandad was a mechanic so I spent many a Sunday afternoon with him in the workshop covered in grease and oil, much to my mother's dismay..whilst the ladies would be in the 'front room' having tea, home made cakes and playing the piano. I then married one (and divorced..must have been my poor bleeding of brakes and complaints at breaking my nails changing springs and spark plugs :rotfl:). I still have a collection of Haynes manuals for cars I owned up to 1999!

So, it's not been the most MSE day today:

    The good:
    - application and paperwork all in at H$BC for DS's new 3% Savings account. He's got almost enough to fill it (of his own saved money) - close on £3k. Good lad :T

    The spends:
    - 2 more March birthdays sorted with gift cards (£50 spent)
    - multi-storey car parking for town and over lunch cost £4.10
    - £15 on lunch (25% voucher used), had a great time :)

Sorting the airing cupboard, all neat and tidy once again. Nothing to throw out though!

Hi Beanie - she's hanging in there :) Mentally she's in reasonable spirits with effort, physically things are pretty poor. She's focussing on getting everything in order so is kind of busying herself (and therefore me and DB :D).

She eats and drinks very little (doesn't want it), sleeps alot, but still gets up, dressed and sits in her lounge, though not particularly mobile. Gets confused and forgetful or repeats things! Remains stubborn though :rotfl:

Medically, palliative care plan is in place/being followed though I'd say she seems stable on the meds/equipment at the moment. She has priority access to GP and nurses and her wishes all known and we know what to do when etc.

Bearing in mind she was diagnosed terminal 13 years ago and was given 3 yrs at that time, I've long since realised we just go with the flow :D My only thing we've not managed is to take her out as she's not gotten well enough for that.

So, Ali, sorry for the hi-jacking :D.

:rotfl: I'll happily talk about cars (well, classic cars) all night.

    Whatever went wrong, Ali?

No mechanics in my family or even real enthusiasts, though both parents knew enough to do servicing and basic fault finding / repairs.

I'm not sure what though - any ideas?

She's an endless flow of flowers, can't have candles/smellies due to chest, has special creams for her skin and isn't interested in food, though I have been doing her a summer fruit salad (strawbs, rasps, cherries, grapes, blueberries) and she does eat that.

She doesn't really read anymore - can't concentrate (always loved her Telegraph crossword and books). Got her new jumpers she wanted.

Has a massive stock of bird seed/balls etc so is able to sit and enjoy watching them come and feed and drink.

    Stumped!

Again I'm sorry to hear about your mother's health, Ali. :(

As for something nice, how does framing a nice photograph that means a lot to her sound? Or find out what music she and your late father liked to listen to when they were first married and buy her a few LPs. :) My father loves talking about the old days and has taken to telling me a lot about when he and mother were first married. I recently bought a few LPs from that time for them to listen to, they both really appreciated it and spent time talking to my son about the music.

Alternatively, if she really likes the area you live in, get a book with old photos of the area. There are lots for Derbyshire and my parents both like them, not sure if this is just a Derbyshire thing, though.

    Thanks Alex.

My Dad's LP collection is still intact..all the way to 78s from both their parents :D. She has changed from liking background noise to complete peace and quiet...I think if she wanted music, it'd probably be Queen :rotfl: We didn't know that until about 10 years ago - closet rock chick! A good idea though, so I will broach that one.

Yep, we've done the fave photos (pinched one from my house at Christmas :rotfl:), but you've given me an idea when you said books from her home village (there are plenty)...which is the scrapbooks and photo albums. Maybe she'd like me to look through them with her..she certainly enjoyed looking at the old photos her cousin found after Great Aunt died last August. :)

We're over there tomorrow and now I know how it affects me when I get back home, I'm hoping I'll be able to manage myself better and keep busy :)
