I'd much rather stick with the MSE comping community - not just for the comps but for the chat and camaraderie too :D

My lastest amusing spot was on the Sixty Plus site.

    Oops!! :rotfl::rotfl: Well spotted fire**fly :T

I'd much rather stick with the MSE comping community - not just for the comps but for the chat and camaraderie too :D

Lest we forget - comping is a HOBBY! It's not about skulldugery and 'hiding' comps like Golum and his 'precious' - surely a hobby is best enjoyed in the company of like-minded others?

Call me a cynic, but I just read this as (to paraphrase) - oi, don't trust the big sites, look what great advice I'm giving that no-one else will, I'm your true comping friend and that's why you can trust me...oh, and by the way spend a tenner on my book!

= just another canny marketing ploy

    :D seconded B*C :D:T:T

It all comes down to what you are looking to get out of comping.

Most people see it as a hobby, anything they win is a bonus, and enjoy being part of the community of it al. For that majority - sharing makes sense to keep the community flourishing, giving back - and the superstitious out there believe in the ying and the yang, karma and all that sort of stuff.

For the 'career comper' and those trying to make a living out of the game, sharing doesn't make sense.

Nor will it for those that take it all way too serious (often the same ones that get major cases of the green eyed monster when someone else wins) and the cheats.

At the end of the day, everyone has their own approach, their own motivations and their own desires from comping and their attitude to this question will be swayed by all of that.

I agree with sharing, and have been amazed by how friendly and helpful most in the community have been since starting and I am definitely thankful for all those that do. I struggle to see how people have the time to share so much though, if they are comping themselves. I struggle just to keep up sometimes.

Whether you believe it's fair to share or not, in a nutshell though - she's not wrong. Her game is offering comping tips. It's not wrong to say sharing lessens your chances. If 10% more people enter, you're 10% less likely to win. For a comping tip - it's on the money.

    All fair points jamielmdjs :)

With regards to your last paragraph - well, thank goodness she told us that! Gosh, here I am thinking 'sharing was caring' when all I needed was someone to point out that the odds would be far better if I didn't share! :p

Sorry, but I just find it's a very obvious thing to say, and if it was without an ulterior motive then I would probably respect her comments more. Unfortunately I just feel it comes over as slightly manipulative (for the exact reasons I gave in my previous post) and so any potential 'sincerity' is sadly wasted on me

  • I think you’ve taken my tip rather too seriously! It’s about those prizes you REALLY want, not just the nice prizes all of us like, share on forums/groups and retweet without thinking!

As an example, there’s a competition on your local Facebook page to win a shed, with 20 entries, and you’re desperate to win a shed - it’s top of your wishlist! Do you immediately like, comment, share and post it onto MSE? If you do, that’s a bit crazy! Certainly, do it with the other comps you see, but not for those prizes that you’d LOVE. It's not being selfish - you found the competition, there’s no comping law saying you have to share it. There’s nothing wrong with an occasional secret (and what if that shed went to a comper who doesn't want it and hasn’t got anywhere to put it, you’d be pretty sad you shared it then!)

Sharing is lovely, and I certainly believe in comping karma - but for every 50 comps I share happily, there will be 1 that I don’t - because it’s a prize on my wishlist. This week I wanted to take my son to the Community Shield, I found a competition with 2 entries. I won, and THEN I shared it and blogged about it so everyone else could have a go for the remaining prizes. But there was no way I was sharing it before I’d won - not when I had a 50/50 chance of winning and my son was eager to go!

But that’s the way I comp. A balance of sharing & secrets. It works for me, but if we all did the same thing, comping would be a boring old hobby! :)
