after yearsssssssssssssss of mushy rice I gave up until my sil who is Asian told me she wouldnnt dream of boiling rice in a pot she bought me a rice cooker, cheap about ten quid equal amount of rice any sort of rice say 2 cups to 2 cups of water put lid on and flip the switch ...............ten mins later it pings and lovely fluffy rice . I use the tescos 40p a bag stuff and it swells up lovely and soft .on occasion its a big bag from Asian supermarket of thai jasmine and it smells and tastes divine so maybe invest a tenner in a basic rice cooker they are small, compact and non-stick.hth xxx

Cheap rice is terrible to get right. We now by brown or basmati white and just rinse it, boil it in plenty of water then drain well when its ready. Cover with a tea towel for 2-3 minutes then serve.

Went to A1di and B * M today and have now spent £54.11 hope to not visit shop now until at least Saturday - will be in Tesco with mum on Friday but am not all that tempted in there so fingers crossed.

Only spends today were 'from stock' - now at £22.50 / £42.18

Budget will take a hit on Friday though. That's going to have to be the day for my Costco trip for chicken, so expect to spend £30-£40 on just that :o Should last me until the end of the year though :)

I've spent part of today making a good start on menu planning for the rest of the month, and I'm managing to base most days around things I've already got in which has to be good for my budget.

Just a holiday to cope with now - 2 GDs and OH's niece to feed with no extra allowed for it

Hi, I subscribed to the grocery challenge regularly around five years ago. My spending then was £200 for five adults in the household. Now there are just 3 adults here and last month my food spending was in the region of £420. I would like to join this month and try to reduce my spending whilst still having a healthy diet.

I would like to aim for £250 in August.

Sunday I did an 4ldi shop which came to £78.
business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527

    Evening all :hello:

As a side note - and I hope it's ok to ask -
Please feel free to ask anything as there will usually be someone on here to point you in the right direction. Often we all learn something as well - one of the benefits of this lovely friendly thread :D

Ooh - please can you tell me which you have as I've been thinking about getting one (can't cook rice for toffee) but a bit bewildered by the choice. Want one that cooks all types of rice.

Had another NSD here today. We had some of the beef chilli, me with courgette strips and DH had potato waffles. It was really good and DH said I could add a bit more chilli next time - couldn't believe it as he always says he doesn't like 'hot' food.

Hope you all have a super Thursday

On your advice, I made a breakfast banana milk shake. Yum! One banana, a couple of spoons of oats and half a pint of milk. So easy! The only problem I had was finding something to put it in to take it to work.

Is there anything you can't hide oats in??!

Tried the banana pancakes for DH just. Don't think he was sure about them but he ate them.

To cook rice we add a cup of rice to two cups of water, cover it and boil until the water is gone. It does require keeping a close eye on it but even value rice comes out fine and as you add limited water it doesn't go mushy. It would probably be nicer and easier in a rice cooker but we just dont have space to store another gadget!
