For what it's worth, as someone who uses Hermes (We lovingly call them Herpes in this house) for eBay sales on a weekly basis, when they're good they're excellent. When they're bad, they plumb new depths of poor service.

For me, Hermes serve a purpose. I live very rurally. To get a parcel to the post office, I'm looking at a couple of quid for petrol, and the minimum car park charge of 70p. Then whatever Royal Mail charge for the parcel, minimum £2.80, which won't include tracking. Total cost for Royal Mail is £5.50. For £3.98, a Hermes courier comes to my house, I get detailed online tracking, a signature from the recipient and £50 compensation. Their couriers who collect are always friendly and leave their mobile phone numbers, and we've got established "Safe Places" to collect from or deliver to if I'm out.

On the negative side, their online customer service team is one of the worst I've ever dealt with. For example, a parcel picked up a small delay recently, and I had a very picky buyer who wanted answers. I used Hermes' Live Chat, and dealt with an insanely rude and defensive chap whose stock answer was "I'm sorry, I can't do that".

I guess that as with all companies, it depends on who you deal with. Sounds like for every excellent member of staff, there's a bad egg. Looks like I've been lucky with my couriers.

Custardy, I'm sorry you don't work for Royal Mail any more. Your insights into what went on behind the scenes were strangely fascinating for me :)
