My hours are 8.30-4.30 but I frequently work 7.45-5, it's just something I have to do to get through my job. Certainly not management.

Being five mins early would be a dream.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

Whoopie doo, I can just imagine your face if asked to do unpaid overtime!

I guess work ethics differ from person to person. No wonder some people don't go very far in their career if they are squealing over 5 minutes! Jeez.

Perhaps if you're on £50k a year, you wouldn't mind doing an extra 5 minutes for nothing. But when you're on minimum wage, it would be illegal.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

I always used to make sure I was at my desk at least 10 minutes (it was usually more like half an hour) before the official start time plus if something was going to take an extra couple of minutes at the end of the day, would stay to finish it off rather than leave it.

I much preferred being able to get myself settled, get a cup of tea, read emails etc in a relaxed fashion before the phones went mad than trying to do all that once they started.

I also never sat and twiddled my thumbs if my workload was light, I would be off trying to help/relieve the pressure on my colleagues, nothing is worse than having nothing to do, makes the day far too long and as an added bonus, it improved my skillset.

I rose through the ranks pretty quickly as a result and my stress levels were so much lower than those trying to do catch up first thing in the morning....and in the end, my salary so much higher.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Exactly! And for some it isn't just a case of switching their pc on, they have to go to the bathroom to apply a bit of make up, change their shoes, get a coffee etc.

Plenty are but many are not working for the petty employers that exploit their workers with unpaid "work" time.

Not recognizing work time properly says more about the employers some people choose to work for.

    turning on essential equipment.
    Counting cash floats.
Cleaning up the workplace taking longer than paid time.
Unpaid breaks but not allowing people to leave the workplace.

I did all of those things too...except the bathroom visit was to go to the loo rather than apply makeup.

It was why I allowed all that extra time so that I was ready (and comfortable) before the day started.

Mind you, I am the same in my private life, I have to be at least 10 minutes early to appointments, I allow extra time in case of problems or so that I have relax time before hand...drives the children absolutely crazy especially when we are arriving at the cinema 30 minutes before the doors open :rotfl:

I've had this in a few jobs. My first job was in a night club where we had to clock out at 3:00 but were usually there until the back of 4 cleaning up and then had to get home at night when none of the taxis were about.

In my last job we were told we had to be there for 8:45 two days a week for "staff meetings" but the only people who turned up were shop floor/working optoms. Management were always swanning in at 10 to and then wondering why everyone else was sitting waiting on them so it got to the stage where that was dropped.

It does suck but you have to put up with it, eventually you'll get promoted or a new job where conditions are better.
