Is that too difficult for you?
It might be for a great many people, including me. That is why I have a speedometer fitted to my car.0 -
Can you ask the garage to fix it before the test? I know a little silly response but all I can think of tonight. Either that or ask the garage to book the car in and fix it, then go for a re test one this issue has been fixed.0

The problem is, far too many people believe that "under limit = safe / over limit = dangerous".
If you're driving correctly to the conditions then the only use for a speedometer is to avoid points on your licence. If your speed's appropriate to what's around you, you'll also rarely be over the prosecution limit except maybe on NSL and (quiet) motorway0 -
Speed doesnt cause accidents anyhow. Bad driving does.0

in an old car of mine (years ago) the speedo broke (tacho still worked).
spent 10 mins with a GPS getting gear ratios and then used this exact method for 18 months (and 2 MOTs).
I knew exactly how fast I was going.
don't think that because you couldn't, nobody does.0 -

I really don't know why I bother. What a ludicrous situation to create for yourself. Get the damned thing fixed. Why should everybody else obey the law and do things correctly and safely, why we should bother, because one day we'll meet you coming the other way and then it'll pointless.0 -
Sorry, are you really suggesting that meeting a vehicle coming the other way, without a working speedo, but with a driver who is aware of his speed, is somehow inherently dangerous...?
Melodrama, much?0 -
I'm saying that there are a lot of drivers who do/don't look at their speedo and/or don't know their speed.
Driving above the limit may or may not be dangerous in a given circumstance, but in addition to that it may be inconsiderate to other road users.
It's not just about whether you can (or think you can) control your car on a given stretch of road, but also what other people are able to expect of you.
Whether they might have the time to complete a manoeuvre, whether a pedestrian can cross the road, whether to go through a chicane, whatever.
I'm not particularly arguing about the rights and wrongs of speeding, but rather using those items to illustrate the considerations.
So driving without the tool which is specifically designed to give you the precise information regarding your speed is irresponsible.0
