Many are electronic now, even if they have "old school dials"
    Check the fuses.
If it was a fuse, the entire dash would be out, warning lights et al - and, if there's ABS, there's a fail right there.

Would a tomtom count as a speedo if you covered the broken one over?

    No.

That's too short an answer for the website, but it's still no.

Had a broken speedo for years. Tested at 2 or 3 different places, never failed on the speedo.

    "Broken" means stuck at zero

I understand a separate GPS speedometer is not acceptable for the MoT, though that's anecdotal. It's a surprise, really, as a GPS until would likely be far more accurate than the original.

The tester does have to drive the car from the car park into the garage to do the test, so they may well notice that the speedo doesn't work.

Of course, many places will do a free (or reduced) re-test, so you'll be able to sort it after and go back.

(Assuming the old MOT still has some time before it expires!)

Not at all, you will find is often a separate or shared fuse, say the Corsa for example the models with electronic speedo share the fuse with the Cig lighter socket, blow that and the speedo goes off.

I'd imagine they'd pay more attention to where they are going rather than looking at the speedo for a few yards.
