Broken speedo MOT tomorrow
Comments
-
Hi all
OH car apeedo decided to pack in yesterday and she has an MOT booked in for tomorrow morning. Will it fail due to this issue?
Cheers
F x
In a word yes.
The car will fail if a speedometer is not fitted, is incomplete, inoperative, has a dial glass broken/missing or cannot be illuminated.0 -
It's a testable item but I'd be interested to know how it's tested?
There's the provision for the tester to road test the car if it's deemed necessary but most aren't.
Under 'typical' test conditions, I can't see how it can be tested.... The brake rollers don't seem likely to run fast enough for modern speedos to start registering?
I'd bet it's one of those things commonly missed. Any MOT testers care to confirm or dismiss my thoughts?0 -
If you take your car to the MOT station, how will the tester, "know" that it doesn't work? The brake rollers speed isn't nearly enough for him to condemn it. If it is all in one piece and the needle isn't permanently showing a speed at rest, he is very unlikely to notice.
^^Apologies for cross posting, Friday mornings typing speed.0 -
what is the exact wording on the mot Manuel then???
you don't road test mots unless your checking 4x4 brakes doing a tapley test.0 -
A broken speedo is an MOT fail item.0

The relevant bit is "Speedo... clearly inoperative"
So, if the needle is wedged at 70mph when the car's stationary, or lying disconnected at the bottom of the binnacle, fail.
If the needle is resting neatly against the zero stop, as normal, then... pass.
'course, it's still a C&U offence not to have a functioning speedo...0 -
As people have already pointed out, unless the tester has to do a decelerometer brake test or take the car on the road for another reason there is little chance of it being noticed.
However, if the needle/display is stuck at 50mph for example. That would fail0 -
Many are electronic now, even if they have "old school dials"
Check the fuses.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -
In theory it's a fail, but it's very unlikely to.
The RFR in the manual is 6.7.2 which is:
"A speedometer incomplete, clearly inoperative or the dial glass missing or broken"
In other words, if (say) the speedo hand has fallen off and is rattling at the bottom of the dial, it's "complete" but clearly won't work. Which would fail.
But if it looks complete, everything is clean and tidy, with nothing obviously jammed, then it won't be "clearly" inoperative because most speedos don't register at all until you get to maybe 10 - 15mph and the tester has no reason to reach that speed during the test.0
