    Hi all

thanks as usual for all the replies. Just popped back to report that the MOT passed with no mention of faulty speedo.

Posted back as it may help others

    Cheers

    Thanks for the info.

I have to say that I think it should be part of the MOT, as otherwise you don't have a means of telling whether you are driving legally (speed-wise).

The car is not roadworthy and needs fixing. It's irrelevant whether it's got an MOT certificate or not.

I'd have told them "speedo's broken please fix it for the MoT" as I handed the keys over. It'd have been done then.

I drove a car around for about 4 years with a broken speedo until a lorry driver kindly wrote it off for me by pushing it up onto the middle of a roundabout. I'm pretty sure it passed a number of MOT tests in that time.

Mind you, this was in the 1990s.

Er, in what way is it not roadworthy? A broken speedo is not even a safety issue as long as you stick to speed limits and drive according to the prevailing road conditions.

I agree that it should be fixed though.

There are two issues I see with driving with a broken speedo:
    1. You can't tell what speed you are doing, so you might (a) be driving too fast, (b) get caught for speeding, or (c) be driving too slowly.
    2. You aren't clocking the mileage you are doing, which means (a) that it'll under-read when you come to sell the car, and (b) your service intervals might be a bit elastic.

Prowla. 1. With the variations in peoples speed on the roads, most would apparently be just as accurate in their speed limit holding with an egg timer in place of their speedo. 2. Just beause a speedo isn't indicating roadspeed, doesn't meen the odometer isn't working.
