  • My girlfriend and I set up Revolut account for our recent New York trip and found it difficult tracking down ATMs that didn't charge a fee. It seems like all the major banks e.g. HSBC, Citibank, Wells Fargo, Apple Bank etc charged fees between $2.25-$5 per transaction. I used the online support to ask which ATMs were fee free but didn't get a response although I believe there were issues with online support at that time. It wasn't until our last day that we found out that TD Bank didn't charge a fee but by then we'd been forced to withdraw from ATMs that charged.

On top of this I had a large transaction fail on a Citibank ATM and was presented with an error message on screen (which I photographed). Eventually the transaction showed up on my balance in the app even though I received no cash. I was told by support that the transaction would be reverted within 10 days but that's not happened. On contacting support again I was informed that the transaction had already been reverted and my balance was correct even though I still see it in the app. I'm still in the process of communicating with support via email but it's long and laborious due to the time it takes for a response.

At present I wouldn't be inclined to recommend the service.

I know we are supposed to be nice to new moneysavers, but......

Most ATMs in the USA charge for cash withdrawals. Neither Revolut, nor any other UK based card issuer has any power over this. Neither are any of them obliged to search out fee free ATMs for you. What are you thinking??!!

Perhaps if you asked here before you left, stating your destination, you may received assistance from the board.

Totally ludicrous that people expect their hands held throughout their lives, taking no responsibility for their actions.

As to the failed transaction, again this can happen with any Prepaid card.

A poor show for a first post, in my opinion.

OK fair point. I guess what you'd call an astute person would have confirmed that ATMs in the US do not charge a fee. I just thought that it was a fair assumption that a fee free card that offered USD withdrawals could be used for fee free transactions in the US. Turns out it can but ATMs that do so are not easy to find. That's what I'm communicating here. The fact that there was no response from their customer support at all was not what I consider to be good service.

You've missed my point in regards to the transaction failure. Of course transactions can fail and cause problems with other prepaid cards. My point here is the fact that the online customer support service is slow and after over two weeks of back and forth messages/emails I still haven't had my money refunded.

I'm not asking for help or any so called hand holding here. I'm just sharing my experiance for others to allow people to judge whether this card is useful to them or not. That's what this thread is for right?

Your experience is based on the fact that you made an assumption that the card would somehow absorb USA ATM charges. Despite them informing you in the clearest possible manner:
The Revolut app and multi-currency card are completely free, and Revolut charges no fees at all!

Some ATM operators and banks occasionally apply their own fees. Unfortunately we have no control over this, but here are the common scenarios in which this might happen, and the steps you can take to avoid their fees:

ATM operators occasionally charge a MasterCard fee. ATM operators will notify you of this fee before the transaction takes place, giving you the option to cancel the withdrawal before you proceed. Most ATM operators do not charge a fee, so if this does happen we recommend trying another nearby ATM where possible.

As to the reversion, they claim that it has taken place. They have a representative here. Contact him.
  • Hi,

Just wondering if Revolut got your money back for purchasing the New York subway passes as it's just done the same thing to me three times? It failed so I tried again but now is showing as a deduction on my account?

Is there an emergency number to contact? This would be really helpful. I have emailed them and gone on the support chat but just get the out of hours reply.

    Thanks
    Dean
  • Revolut refunded the rogue transaction yesterday afternoon and apologised for any inconvenience.

"Most ATM operators do not charge a fee"
    Should probably read:
"Most ATM operators outide the US do not charge a fee"
  • The only number I found for Revolut was the one on their website: +44 (0) 203 725 75 83

Probably manned the same hours as online support but worth a try.

Why should it read that? Then when you go to somewhere like Thailand you'll complain again.
You should do your own research and not expect everything to be covered for you. Revolut are not your parents.

    HI

I just found out about this today so got the App & ordered the bank card for a trip to Turkey. I might not get my card in time but what can I do with the App on its own once there? Anything? Or is the card crucial?

You can use the virtual card online. That's about it.
Ask Support to send you out an emergency card if you are leaving this week.
