Summer attire

Long shorts, chinos, linen trousers, 3/4 length trousers.
Colourful polo shirts (Ralph Lauren or Gant do lovely colours) or short sleeved shirts.
Flip flops, Birkenstock style 'sandals' or slip on van style shoes: trainer socks/liners or no socks!0 -

yep, this is what i like on men in their 30s for summer - vans/converse/toms with chinos or 3/4 length trousers or combats/combat shorts. You can wear shirts, t-shirts or polo shirts with any or all of these.0 -
I was casting my eye around church this morning (as I don't get many other opportunities to eye up groups of men / men younger than DH).
Other than jeans, we had everything, from chinos to cargo shorts. All lengths.
One problem with the shorts (of any length) is what you then wear on your feet. Sorry, but socks are out. IMO of course. And yet that is what a lot of the chaps were wearing: shorts, socks and trainers. Seriously?
'Smart' shorts need to be above the knee, with a crease down the front.
I like Chinos. I think multiple pockets are practical but not 'smart'.
A polo shirt isn't as smart as a 'normal' shirt, again IMO.
But really, if you feel comfortable, and you're not embarrassing your wife, wear what you like!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
The problems i have with shorts are that as a child I had tight skin on my shins (not sure why) and it kept splitting so I have scar tissue and patchy leg hair which looks most odd.
The chinos are really smart I do like them, ones like the light beige and the others light grey, The polo shirts are nice, I like them also, 3 colours, white, purple and grey
I've been at a festival this weekend - a 'nice' one, so the majority of men there were in their thirties.
I'm surprised how many have varicose veins despite not being the slightest bit overweight - and they don't care. I only notice because my uncles had them very young.
The oh was concerned about psoriasis on his legs. But when it got to 36 degrees indoors, the curtains drawn and a fan blowing constantly, he rediscovered his Don't Care as well. He borrowed my Vans and black trainer socks and looked fine in a pair of just below the knee shorts, as did everybody else at the festival this weekend. Oh, and he shaves his remaining hair, too - adding a flat cap to protect against heatstroke or sunburn.
He has short facial hair. Can't help it being longer than that at the top of his head because there isn't any - but being completely clean shaven reminds him too much of Dr Evil. Or Donald Pleasance. (He's no Yul Brynner or Telly Savalas in looks or build. Just keep it tidy and you can have any length beard you like. (Scraggy beards are better on scraggy old men from the Deep South - of America, not Portsmouth - who play dobro).I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

I think chinos with a thin shirt - not polo - always look smart. Jeans tend to be too thick for hot weather. Definitely not tracky bottoms, unless you want to look like Benefits Street.
I've seen pics of Prince William looking very smart but casual, in chinos and pale blue shirt.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

I agree. I hate seeing socks!
DH 'forgets' about this golden rule (IMO) all the time. I do think socks (trainer liners so nothing visible) & trainers are acceptable when going out for a long walk/physical activity, but definitely not when out and about more generally.0 -
3/4 length shorts are a big fat NO in my book. Smart knee length shorts or chino type trousers. I always think that 3/4 length shorts look horrible on any man who is wearing them

I don't think they look that good on a lot of ladies either

I don't like 3/4 trousers on men or women really but it depends on the cut. Flappy about bits round the calves look dreadful. As others have said, I wouldn't worry about your hairless bits on the shins, no one will notice. Matalan do some nice shorts that are knee length and you can dress them up or down depending on whether you wear them with a 't' or shirt.
Chinos and linen trousers are good for cooler days or when shorts aren't appropriate.
Personally I hate football shirts. Why would you want to walk about wearing polyester unless you really had too?0 -
Chinos  i hope you took them back? If my wife bought me a pair of chinos, i would set fire to them! What do you think is good, smart summer attire for men?
As the weather has got warmer I mentioned to my wife that my jeans were feeling a bit too warm, im not really a short wearing type of person and the only other things i own are a couple of track suit bottoms that I wear if im doing something grubby in the garden.
The wife, on her routine trip to Primark picked me up a couple of pairs of light coloured chinos and polo shirts. I am grateful for the thought but I feel as though I look ready for the golf course.
I look at people out and about where I am and it is mostly shorts and no tops or grey tracksuits, it isnt the most affluent area.
