Well, I took the MIL shopping for a wedding outfit yesterday, so I think I'd make quite a good personal shopper! :D

I look at people out and about where I am and it is mostly shorts and no tops or grey tracksuits, it isnt the most affluent area.

    What can you guys recommend??

i would rather go with the ready for golf look your wife picked than look than more of a ready for jeremy kyle look.
Hard to recommend anything not knowing your age, style, and taste. Probably can't go too wrong with knee length chino style shorts and a plain t shirt in neutral colours.

31, 5'10, not much hair on my head, through baldness, so shave the rest, stubble beard. Caucasian male. 34" waste, not muscular, just average.

Normal clothes were trainers, jeans, t-shirt (mostly have some picture on them, quirky), jumper (most of which have a hood). started moving away from hoods and more into the wool type jumpers.

Feel now that im at the age where I should look a bit smarter day to day and as I need some summer clothes it is a good time to start.

It's not what you where, it's how you wear it :rotfl:

Hmmm, i found my jeans were a bit hot the other day, although they were skinny hugo boss jeans which i had recently bought so i put on a different pair of regular jeans (armani) and found they were more comfortable.

Armani jeans seem to allow more breathing.

I have been contemplating buying some shorts but this is England, we don;t have hot weather very often so they wont get wore very much at all. Plus, i seem to have some slight bald patches on my knees which i think was down to some hanky panky i had on carpet 10 years ago.

Some polo shirts look nice, although in this weather i think plain crew neck white t shirts are best. You can get them from places like river island for 10 quid and they are ok.

What do I recommend? Wearing the trousers your very sensible wife bought for you. If the polo shirts aren't your thing then a couple of cotton shirts worn untucked would be casual enough without looking like you belong on JK.

What about linen trousers. They quickly look very creased but that is part of the charm.

My DH has several pairs which were from M&S and to make them even more comfy, they have a drawstring waist. He obviously wears them with untucked tops, t-shirt, short sleeve shirt (also possibly linen) or a polo shirt.

OK, they may not get a huge amount of wear in the UK, but they come out every time we go abroad which is a fair bit now that we are retired!

Chinos are smart and cool. Stick with them.

Shorts only for leisure and three-quarter trousers, never!

If you ever go to Florida buy some jeans there. They are lighter weight.

For an alternative point of view, my partner wears almost exclusively walking trousers from Go Outdoors (fleecelined ones for winter). They have lots of pockets, belt loops, are breezy and usually can zip off at the knee to become shorts if the heat becomes unbearable, as this week has!
They are quick drying and I think a little wicking. They aren't the smartest thing, but they are cool (as in not warm), not too scruffy, not too smart, versatile (You can wear black ones and it would take some time for people to notice that you're not wearing proper trousers; my partner has some black and some green), and you can carry your keys, wallet, sunglasses, tissues, ipod etc etc in the one garment. They are also very loose in the groin area, so not too much squishing or melding onto the sides of his leg. Good air flow, apparantly! TMI? They also launder really well, coming out of the washing machine almost dry, and on a good day dry within half an hour on the radiator or on the line.

The problems i have with shorts are that as a child I had tight skin on my shins (not sure why) and it kept splitting so I have scar tissue and patchy leg hair which looks most odd.

The chinos are really smart I do like them, ones like the light beige and the others light grey, The polo shirts are nice, I like them also, 3 colours, white, purple and grey

Buddy your a bloke nobody is going to pay any attention to your patches, they are going to be too busy getting on with their own stuff, anyway if anyone asks you just make up some amazing bul***it he man story :)
There is a guy in my local town wears shorts and he has a false leg, its one of these new almost terminator looking things no one really cares no one stops and points.
wear your shorts round the home, then go a bit further each time ie corner shop, you really will be ok
